Aurora Flag Football League launches in September at Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School

Humberview Huskies Head Coach and Aurora resident Adrian Piscitelli has been providing a steady supply of football players to the OUA over the last four years—having resurrected a ROPSSAA high school football program and restored its pre-Pandemic glory days.

In a related initiative, the long-time high school teacher and Athletic Director at Humberview SS has launched the Caledon Flag Football League in July to much acclaim and, after that on-field success, has turned his eyes eastward to offer a similar recreational opportunity for Central York athletes.

In his most recent creative act, Coach Piscitelli is launching the Aurora Flag Football League next month. The fledgling sports organization will host its practices and games at Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School’s pristine new field facilities on Sunday mornings between 8 – 11 a.m.

The veteran football coach pitched the three benefits for athletes who join the AFFL: “They’re building confidence, learning new skills, and having fun playing the fastest-growing sport in North America. Flag football is a demonstration sport at the 2028 Olympics and has replaced tackle football at the NFL’s Pro Bowl. Most importantly, the Aurora Flag Football League is not an American franchise, and we’re not connected to a big football program. It’s a grassroots company that’s run by Aurora residents. We’re singularly focused on flag football. Everything we do as an organization will be reinvested in the age group divisions that we’re serving and instructing.”

Coach Piscitelli delineated the age groups featured in the new sports league and the logistics of joining the AFFL for its inaugural season in September: “Cost of registration is $300 for the U16, U14, U12, and U10 divisions. It includes eight sessions and a jersey to keep. We’ll provide the belt and the flags. Cleats are recommended, but soccer cleats are fine on the turf. We have a ‘Learn to Play’ Program, too, for $200. The start date will be Sunday, September 13 and the inaugural season will end Sunday, October 25.”

The Humberview Huskies Senior Football team from Bolton and the OFSSAA-winning Senior Girls Flag Football team—the Robert F. Hall Wolfpack from Caledon East – will comprise the on-field instruction team. The instructors will be coordinated by Brooke Ross—a Humberview SS graduate who is a four-time OUA Flag Football champion with the Queen’s University Golden Gaels.

However, Coach Piscitelli is also looking to hire more local residents to augment his on-field instructional squad: “We’re looking to hire local Senior High School students who demonstrate our values of responsibility, empathy, leadership, and giving back to the community. We’ll be paying the on-field instructors $20 per hour. We’d like to give local high school students the opportunity to develop transferrable skills as Flag Football instructors and put meaningful experiences like coaching and instructing young players on their resumes.”
