Sports Dome purchase costs Town nearly $1 million

April 9, 2021   ·   0 Comments

A deal to purchase the Aurora Sports Dome has cost the Town nearly $1 million.

On Thursday, the Town formally announced details of their acquisition of the Industrial Parkway North sports facility.

The move to place the dome under municipal ownership was announced at the beginning of March with few details brought forward at that time.

The April 1, however, put some dollars and cents on the table.

“The Town of Aurora is pleased to announce it has officially taken over ownership of the Aurora Sports Dome, effective today,” said the Town in a statement. “The Town completed an asset purchase transaction acquiring the Dome and other related assets from a private owner for $995,000.”

The Town noted that funding for the Dome purchase came through long-term debt, and operating and future capital costs would be covered by rental rates going forward.

“I’m excited about this investment into the community’s future,” said Mayor Tom Mrakas in a statement. “By taking the Sports Dome into Town ownership, we will be able to expand access and increase affordability for citizens and sports groups – delivering great value and excellent service at no additional cost to the taxpayers.”

Bookings for the Sports Dome can now be made through the Town by contacting bookings@aurora.ca.
