On a weekend where the junior level Battle of Yonge Street took a backseat to the minor rivalry between the Aurora Tigers and Newmarket Redmen, it was the Tigers who came out on top.
With over one hundred games played between the two organizations over the weekend, it was Newmarket who earned bragging rights. But in the OJHL, it was Aurora who earned two points in the North division.
The second meeting of the year between the two on Friday resulted in a 3 – 1 win for the Tigers, after falling to the Redmen on the road last week.
It was Tyler Davis who opened the scoring with his third of the year just over nine minutes in, capping off a nice passing play from Anthony Romano and Elijah Gonsalves.
Though Newmarket pressed hard for the equalizer in the second period, Bradley Van Schubert stood tall in net to maintain the goose egg. Luca Esposito doubled the lead in the last minute of the frame.
Van Schubert was finally beaten in the last minute of the third period by Newmarket’s Ryan Hunt, though Aurora’s captain and leading scorer Jake Bricknell capitalized with thirteen seconds to go for a final score of 3 – 1.
Van Schubert’s sixth win of the season, and second in a row after posting a shutout against Whitby last week, was highlighted by 38 saves on 39 shots faced.
With the Markham Royals remaining stale over the weekend in the OJHL schedule, Aurora has crept back up to within a point of the top of the North division, posting a record of 10-6-1 in the process.
Newmarket, winless in their last three games, are now tied at 21 points apiece with the Tigers, while both teams sit seven points up on the Pickering Panthers.
The Wellington Dukes lead the conference, and the league, with an impressive record of 14-3-1.
Aurora will contend with the Stouffville Spirit in their only action this week, making a road trip Saturday night at 7:30p.m.
Stouffville, holding onto a record of 6-12-0, bested the Tigers 6 – 3 in their only meeting so far this season.
