The Newmarket Minor Hockey offices are about to get a hint of black and yellow.
The thirteenth edition of the Battle of Yonge Street saw all teams across the Aurora and Newmarket Minor Hockey landscape meet on the ice over the weekend, split between the Aurora Community Centre and Newmarket’s Magna Centre.
With a final score of 64 – 52, and a record of 28-22-3, the Aurora Tigers came out on top of the longstanding rivalry.
“The AMHA will receive the trophy to display in their office and a year of bragging rights, while the NMHA must display the Tigers jersey in their office for one year,” said Kevin Winsor, vice-president of rep for the NMHA.
“It came down to the final few games on Sunday with Aurora pulling through to beat Newmarket.”
This year’s win also comes with some extra bragging rights: last year’s edition, won by Newmarket, tied up the series between the clubs at six for just Newmarket’s second win in six years.
Corby Saltzman, communications director for the AMHA, said the organization “can’t wait” to have their jersey hung in Newmarket for the year, adding a special thanks to all the “players, teams, vendors, fans, and parents for making the weekend a special success.”
The weekend also included barbecues, food from local vendors, as well as a food drive to benefit local food banks.
