Councillor Jeff Thom will not seek a second term at Town Hall.
The first-term Council member, who was elected in 2014, announced his decision on Wednesday.
“It has been a tremendous honour and privilege to serve on Aurora Town Council,” said Councillor Thom in a statement. “Nevertheless, I have decided I will not be seeking another term as Councillor in the 2018 Municipal Election. I have made this decision to spend more time with my family.
“I am extremely grateful for the support of my wife and family over the course of this term of Council; I could not have done it without them. I would also like to wholeheartedly thank the residents of Aurora. The enthusiasm, volunteerism and kindness of the people of this community are truly what make Aurora one of the best places to live.”
When Councillor Thom was elected in 2014, he ranked with Councillor Paul Pirri as Aurora’s youngest Council members.
Councillor Pirri announced his decision not to seek re-election last month.
With both Councillors Thom and Pirri out of the running, if the municipal election were held today, there is a chance for a number of new faces to be at the table.
At press time, Mayor Geoff Dawe, along with Councillors John Abel and Tom Mrakas are all running for Mayor. As there can be only one winner, at least four faces on the nine-member Council will not be there once the Town elects its new seven-member Council (one mayor and six councillors) this October.
