The Aurora Barbarians Senior Men’s rugby team opened their run for the 2013 McCormick Cup on Saturday with a trip to Sarnia and a lopsided victory over the home team Saints, 97 to 10.

The Barbarians put up fifteen tries in the one-sided game, rarely pausing from the open style of play that served them so well through the end of the regular season.

After the game, Aurora coach Ian McLeod was not impressed.

“This kind of blowout is not good for rugby,” he said. “Sarnia is demoralized and we come away with a bunch of bad habits that will hurt us in the next round.”

The McCormick Cup competition seeds the top sixteen clubs from the Marshall Premiership and Provincial Leagues in a knock-out format. The York Region club was seeded second to Sarnia’s fifteenth ranking, a wide margin as evidenced on the day.

Next Saturday, the first round winners will meet in quarter-final play and advance to the championship round while the losers will go to the consolation rounds. Aurora will host London St. George at Fletcher’s Fields, number ten London having squeaked by number seven Oakville Crusaders in a rematch of last year’s Cup final 51 to 50 in a game played at London.

Scoring for Aurora in the rout was Michael Neely with four trys, Bryn Davies with three, Jesse Walker with two and singles going Sean Sinel, Dan Resnick, Matt Chown, Najeeb Obadi, Nolan Ott and Connor Libby. Davies added eleven converts for a total of 37 points on the day.

“We need two good sessions this week to adjust our play for London,” Coach McLeod added. “They are very dynamic offensively and have an outstanding playmaker in Derek Daypuck, a former National team player and current Ontario Blue. Derek is always a threat.”

An admirable improvement since the beginning of the season. Time to deliver another champion to the community. It’s good to see rugby growing in the area.
