The Canadian Cancer Society is calling time on Aurora’s Relay for Life.
Beginning next year, the Aurora Relay, which has been held for several years on the Magna Campus, will be merged with Newmarket’s Relay in time for the June 19 meet at Pickering College.
According to Karen Beaulieu, Fundraising coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Holland River Unit, the move is part of a wider review of Relay for Life. “All over provincially we’re trying to make it bigger by, instead of having it in two communities, hosting one big one,” she said.
“Our event is going to be from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. [rather than 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.] because we thought over the years we have seen participation declining and we think one of the reasons is the 12 hours is challenging for some people. Six hours just seems more feasible for some people. We’re opening up the door and seeing how a six-hour event would appeal.”
