Aurora Students Finish WasteBuster App, head to FLL Canada Cup

Back in October, students from Aurora held an outreach event as part of National Waste Reduction Week at 229 Industrial Parkway S, to educate the local public on circular economy.

The team, Équipe Francobotique, representing École élémentaire catholique Saint-Jean and École intermédiaire catholique Renaissance, chose to address the problem of overconsumption and waste as a part of their First Lego League Challenge Program.

Last week, Head Coach of the team Renée Northrup announced the students have completed the WasteBuster App – York Region Edition.

“It has been updated over the last month to include redesign ideas and links to local events for all municipalities in York Region,” Northrup told The Auroran.

“This update is our final version, and is now available on Google Play. Anyone who downloaded it previously will have access to the update automatically.”

This app is intended to discover circular solutions for unwanted items. Instead of immediately resorting to throwing items in the garbage, this application will find a way to ensure the item can be reused, repaired or recycled properly.

In an effort to promote their app Équipe Francobotique published a video on YouTube and created their very own poster.

“Our goal is to get as many individuals as possible to download our app and give it a try. It is free to download and works on all Android phones,” Northrup said.

Amidst this latest achievement, Équipe Francobotique, were also crowned champions at the First Lego League Ontario West Provincial Championships in February and won the ‘Implementation’ Major Award at the Ontario Innovation Celebration in March.
