For the fourth straight year, the Aurora Barbarian women picked up some hardware in the final weekend of Ontario Women’s League rugby play.
The Barbs faced off against the Niagara Wasps in the bronze medal matchup on Saturday at Fletcher’s Field, a week after a heartbreaking loss to the Guelph Redcoats in the semifinal that saw them fall one point short.
They returned to the pitch on Saturday with vigor, posting a total of twelve tries to Niagara’s one, with the score reading 76 – 5 by the final whistle.
Aurora last lifted the OWL Cup in 2016 when they defeated the Toronto Saracens, who bested the Barbs in a championship rematch last year.
It was once again Toronto heading to the final on Saturday, this time facing Guelph, who they beat handily 46 – 36 for their second title in two years.
Winning the second-tier division was the Guardian Angels rugby program, a first-year team affiliated with the Barbarians, who came out on top 39 – 17 over the Saracens.
The Aurora men, who completed their season with a 4-6-0 record in late July, will play in the McCormick Cup tournament in late September.
