The Minor Bantam York-Simcoe Express are tops in Ontario.
Owen Sculthorp and Carter Cretney played the heroes in the OMHA championship matchup Sunday in Pickering against the Quinte Red Devils, with Sculthorp knotting the game at three with 29 seconds to go and Cretney providing the overtime winner.
The Express came back from a 3 – 1 score at the first intermission, taking down the top-ranked Red Devils to earn revenge after a 2 – 0 shutout loss in the championship’s round robin.
They were joined on the podium by a pair of other Express teams to earn some hardware this weekend, with both the Atom and PeeWee squads taking home the bronze.
The Atom Express took home a medal for the second straight year with a 4 – 0 victory over the Peterborough Petes, who they also defeated in the tournament’s final round robin game to reach the bronze medal matchup.
The PeeWees were on the right end of a 2 – 1 score on Sunday over the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs, earning some revenge of their own following a 2 – 1 loss to the Bulldogs in the preliminaries.
Bradley Gardiner scored the game’s opening goal late in the second period, catching the Hamilton defense off guard in stepping out of the penalty box and receiving a long pass from Fabio Ionta.
Hamilton tied the game in the dying minutes of the third period, before Fionn Keon played the overtime hero in the third overtime with a breakaway goal for the Express.
