The race to this year’s YRAA football finals could come down to the wire.
A pair of upsets last week has created a logjam down the middle in the six-team Tier 1 league, with two weeks left on the regular season schedule.
The King City Lions surprised the league on Thursday with a 15 – 6 win over the St. Maximilian Kolbe Mustangs on home turf, pulling within one point of last year’s division finalist.
A scoreless first quarter was highlighted by a strong defensive effort for both sides, before kicker David Kang opened the scoring with a field goal on a long Lions drive early in the second.
He would add one more to his total, while quarterback Kyle Holloway scored his team’s only major on a short run in the red zone.
St. Max’s only score of the game came on a long scoop-and-score by Josh Torres in the fourth quarter.
Their first loss of the year drops the Mustangs to a record of 2-1-1, while the Lions nip at their heels just one point back.
Bill Crothers also picked up their first win of the season on Thursday with a 31 – 1 drubbing of St. Brother Andre, giving them three points on the season, only two back of the Mustangs.
The reigning YRAA champion Huron Heights remains the only undefeated team on the season.
Following their bye week, St. Max will face off against Huron Heights in their final game of the season on November 3.
