The Whitchurch-Stouffville Minor Midget AA Clippers made history in Aurora Sunday, becoming the first AA team in the franchise’s history to skate off with a York-Simcoe championship.

A marathon series with the Aurora Tigers went the distance, with Game 6 of the first-to-six-points series going down at the Aurora Community Centre in front of a packed house.

Unfortunately for the Tigers and their fans, Game 6 was over after the first fifteen minutes: a 6 – 1 loss including a pair of late empty-netters.

The Clippers scored the game’s first two goals, off the sticks of Nolan MacInnis and Sam Atanackovich. Adam De Piero had the lone Tigers goal in the first period, tying the game at one before Stouffville exploded for five more in the final two frames.

Aurora played catch-up for most of the series, with the Clippers needing only a tie in Game 5 on Saturday to clinch the title. Stouffville took an early lead in their home barn on the powerplay, before Matthew Ferry tied it up late in the first off a pass from Parker Boland.

Matthew Hollett notched two goals in the second period, the second proving to be the game winner as Stouffville added one in the final minute of regulation for a 3 – 2 Tigers victory.

Sunday’s 6 – 1 blowout was the first to be decided by more than two goals in the series.

Whitchurch-Stouffville also sent the Tigers packing from the OMHA preliminary rounds in early February, in another six-game series.
