(Re: Conservative candidate’s signs ‘misleading’, August 6)
I am pleased to respond to Mr. Kean’s concerns regarding the use of “re-elect” versus “elect” on my campaign signs.
Having served as a Member of Parliament for the last four years, I am currently seeking re-election in the new riding of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, where I live. In accordance with Elections Canada rules and regulations, all Members elected prior to the current campaign can use “re-elect” on their election materials.
As a result of riding re-distribution, a process which added three new ridings in York Region and a total of thirty across the country, many of the last Parliament’s MPs are seeking re-election in electoral districts that have been either re-defined or newly created. Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill is one such riding, having been formed from parts of the former Newmarket-Aurora, Oak Ridges-Markham, and Richmond Hill ridings.
Using re-elect over elect provides voters with important information about their candidate choices. To infer that an individual, who was a sitting MP prior to the election call was not really elected as Mr. Kean would suggest, is misleading.
While I have not yet had the privilege of representing the wonderful residents of Aurora, I can assure them that should I be given that honour; I will give 110% of my time and effort, 7 days a week on their behalf – just as I have done for the constituents I have represented since 2011.
Anyone wishing to speak to me further on this, or any other matter, is welcome to contact me by phone at 905-918-1880 or by email at info@voteforcostas.com.
