Dunks take down coaches in exhibition showcase

One day after having played three important games (1-2 record) in the 2015 Provincial Qualifiers in Brampton for Special Olympics Ontario Basketball, the Aurora Dunks returned to the courts for an exhibition game in front of nearly 200 basketball fans at the Magna Centre in Newmarket.

Sunday’s game, featuring the Dunks versus York North Basketball Association (YNBA) coaches, was held between the bronze and gold medal games of the Ontario Cup U-11 Provincial Championship hosted by YNBA.

Assistant Coach Kim Peace led the two lines to victory over the coaches and the Toronto Raptor mascot was the only “player” to score a basket against the Dunks.

Prior to the game, Volunteer Coordinator Nancy Black addressed the audience and gave details about Special Olympics Ontario – Aurora (SOO-Aurora). Nancy also thanked YNBA Founder Jason Scott for providing the opportunity to showcase the athletes and SOO – Aurora.

Collaborations like this enable SOO-Aurora to fulfill one of its objectives of bringing awareness to Special Olympics Ontario and to the athletes with more competitive opportunities.

Player Mary Haberer exclaimed after the game that it was exciting and that winning wasn’t the most important thing. Haberer said that getting the chance to play and have fun was most important.
