York Symphony Orchestra presents pianist Vivian Chen![]() To help perform some of the most popular music of Russian composers at its next pair of concerts, the York Symphony Orchestra will welcome young Canadian pianist Vivian Chen. Originally from Ottawa, Ms. Chen is currently completing her final year at the University of Toronto majoring in performance under the tutelage of Lydia Wong. Most recently, she performed in Weill Recital Hall for her Carnegie Hall debut in March 2017, and was awarded the bronze prize at the Vancouver International Music Competition in October. In the previous year, she was awarded first prize in the Canadian Music Competition, and was one of the students chosen to perform with the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra as one of the winners of the UTSO Concerto Competition. Ms. Chen will play Dmitri Shostakovich's uncharacteristically cheerful Piano Concerto #2, one of the composer's most accessible and most popular works. The program will begin with Alexander Borodin's tone poem celebrating the confluence of Russian and Asian cultures, In the Steppes of Central Asia. It will conclude with Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov's masterpiece of orchestral colour, the suite Scheherazade, based on One Thousand and One Nights. The concerts are Saturday, April 21 at 8 pm at the Trinity Anglican Church in Aurora, and Sunday, April 22 at 3.00 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets for April 21 may be purchased by calling 416 410-0860; for April 22nd, call 905 787-8811 or go online at www.rhcentre.ca. Tickets will also be available at the doors of both venues. |
