While every Canadian family has been touched by cancer, the Country Day School \u201cfamily\u201d found this year\u2019s run to hit especially close to home.<\/p>\n

Last school year, Grade 6 student James Eacock was diagnosed with a brain tumour, undergoing surgery followed by extensive chemotherapy at the Hospital for Sick Children.<\/p>\n

And what better way to show their support than for the CDS community to dedicate this year\u2019s Terry Fox Run to James and his battle.
\n\u201cIt didn\u2019t take a lot,\u201d said Ann Wildberger, Director of the Junior School at CDS. \u201cEveryone in the school really got into it, really brought it together.\u201d<\/p>\n

James\u2019s mother Alison was a surprise guest speaker at the Junior Assembly on the sunny Tuesday morning.
\n\u201cIt was incredible,\u201d said Kim Sillcox, director of external communications. \u201cShe just shared her personal story; it was very heartfelt and meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sillcox said the speech was especially moving for the students.<\/p>\n

\u201cAside from a handful of new kids, everyone knows James, and what he was going through last spring. So it was quite a moving experience.\u201d
\nWith James as inspiration, CDS student council looked to bring the student body together in spectacular fashion.
\nAnd a massive group hug fit the bill.<\/p>\n

All 710 students took part in a \u201cgroup hug\u201d behind the school in the afternoon, forming a heart-shape with arms wrapped around each other.
\n\u201cThe hug wasn\u2019t a sad moment,\u201d said Wildberger. \u201cIt was actually one of hope. I think that\u2019s the story of Terry Fox, one of hope. And the expression of love for James is one of hope as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The inspiration for the hug came from \u201cMegan\u2019s Walk,\u201d a five-kilometre walk founded 13 years ago by a mother who lost her daughter to cancer.
\nThe day continued with a colourful twist on the traditional Terry Fox Run \u2013 a \u201cColour Run,\u201d held for the Middle and Senior schools throughout the 100-acre campus.<\/p>\n

According to CDS, Colour Runs are meant to celebrate \u201chealthiness and happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey wanted to do something different,\u201d said Sillcox. \u201cThe student council wanted to end the day on a fun and happy note, and leave everyone with a smile on their face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most touching moment of the day came after the run had ended, when Alison, Wildberger, and some of James\u2019s friends spoke with James via Facetime at SickKids.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to hear him, and hear his voice, and see his face, it was so worth it,\u201d said Wildberger. \u201cHe\u2019s just a little boy. He\u2019s been with our school since Grade 1, so for him to still be involved in Terry Fox Day this year was so special.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Country Day School truly is James\u2019s \u201csecond family.\u201d After the diagnosis, the school was the second call made by the family.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis classmates have had his back throughout the entire ordeal,\u201d said Wildberger. \u201cMany of the children have journeyed with him since Grade 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important that James keeps his connection with the school. We felt we had to honour this boy, the journey he\u2019s been through.
