\u201cIt\u2019s an idea that could change the look of Aurora.\u201d
\nI glanced over at my friend John as he nodded his head sagely at this pronouncement.
\nWe had gotten together for dinner, and as often happened, we ended up discussing the various quirks and complexities of life here in Aurora. Although not the best meal topic, our conversation had turned to waste and recycling.
\n\u201cYou know that the Town is considering no longer allowing residents to use the standard green and black garbage bags you see every other week at the curb?\u201d he continued.
\n\u201cYes, next year, I think. Aren\u2019t they concerned that people are throwing out recyclable or dangerous objects? Now they want us to use clear plastic bags, so you can see what\u2019s in there. Ugh,\u201d I concluded with a shudder at the mental image.
\n\u201cExactly. No one wants people looking at their garbage. It\u2019s not only unsightly, but kind of an invasion of privacy.\u201d
\n\u201cWell, there\u2019s not much you can do to hide your personal life if it\u2019s in plain sight like that. Unless you want to conceal your denture and hemorrhoid cream containers in an old Cornflake package \u2026 No wait,\u201d I paused, \u201ccereal boxes are recycling…\u201d
\n\u201cThere is a way around it,\u201d John smiled.
\n\u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d
\n\u201cPre-printed garbage bags.\u201d
\nSeeing the quizzical look on my face, he continued. \u201cYou take what looks to be a clear bag and you pre-print pictures of trash on it: Styrofoam, plastic packaging, broken china, toothpaste tubes, rags\u2026 anything. That way when you look at the bag, it appears like you\u2019re seeing a clear bag with items visible inside it.\u201d
\n\u201cBut it\u2019s really a solid bag that you can put anything in, and no one will know,\u201d I said, making the mental connection.
\nJohn nodded.
\n\u201cThat\u2019s neat,\u201d I agreed. \u201cBut won\u2019t a street full of bags apparently filled with the same garbage look suspicious?\u201d
\n\u201cThat\u2019s why you have them printed with various designs. There\u2019s a ton of things people throw out, and no end of different products. Throw in odd sizes and different combinations, and it won\u2019t be hard to come up with a number of different looks.\u201d
\n\u201cEach package of bags could contain several different styles,\u201d he explained, \u201cso if you left a few bags at the curb, each would look unique.\u201d
\n\u201cYou could even customize them, with certain types of bags that suggest different users. Everyone could have pictures of tissues and plastic packaging on their bags, but growing families could also have diapers and broken toys, and those with teens could have take-out food containers.\u201d
\n\u201cThere are a lot of possibilities,\u201d I admitted. But what if people take a really close look. They\u2019ll see it\u2019s just a picture.\u201d
\n\u201cWho\u2019ll want to get that close to someone else\u2019s old smelly garbage?\u201d John asked. \u201cDo you do that now? You said it yourself earlier; \u2018ugh\u2019.\u201d
\n\u201cTrue. But do you think there\u2019s a market for this? After all, Aurora\u2019s only one town.\u201d
\n\u201cBut it\u2019s not just Aurora. I think Markham has already introduced this clear bag system, and it\u2019s bound to expand to other municipalities.\u201d
\n\u201cMark my words,\u201d John nodded. \u201cTake a closer look along the curbs when the Town introduces the clear bag system. I\u2019ll bet you someone\u2019ll have these pre-printed bags available by then.\u201d
\nOur conversation moved on to other subjects, but as I was heading home, my mind turned back to our waste discussion. I wasn\u2019t sure if this proposal would necessarily change the look of Aurora, but it was an interesting idea.<\/p>\n
