{"id":38753,"date":"2026-08-20T16:12:51","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T20:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=38753"},"modified":"2026-08-20T16:13:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T20:13:00","slug":"york-region-artists-put-fresh-spin-on-collage-art-in-remix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/york-region-artists-put-fresh-spin-on-collage-art-in-remix\/","title":{"rendered":"York Region artists put fresh spin on collage art in REMIX"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collage is a time-tested art form, but seven York Region artists have come together to put a fresh spin on the medium in Remix, a new gallery exhibition launched by the Aurora Cultural Centre last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remix, which features the work of Elif Giray, Kate Greenway, Catherine Marshall, Sheresha McIntyre, Alysha Rocca, Julia Spittel, and Edward Tsui, is on now through November 15 in the Aurora Cultural Centre\u2019s Great Hall Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsing collage as a metaphor for the construction and continual evolution of identity, Remix considers how collage-making mirrors the ways in which lived experiences, cultural influences, and memories shape our self-perception,\u201d says Ashlyn Gregory, Gallery Manager for the Aurora Cultural Centre. \u201cThe artists in this exhibition embrace collage not only as a technique, but as a perspective. By bringing together seemingly unrelated fragments, they articulate an understanding of identity as intersectional and, at times, contradictory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDrawing on the rich history of collage, the artists in this exhibition create works that are simultaneously referential yet completely unique. Their influences \u2013 ranging from abstract expressionism and surrealist automatism to pop art and protest art \u2013 are a testament to the versatility of collage and artists&#8217; long-standing fascination with the medium.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking at last week\u2019s Opening Reception for Remix, Gregory said she was pleased to help bring these visions together and the exhibition to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe greatest and most rewarding part of my job is collaborating with artists and finding meaningful ways to bring their work to the community,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a pleasure to work with all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>About the Artists:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Elif Giray (@egiray) \u2013<\/em> Elif Giray is a Toronto-based, self-taught collage artist of Turkish-Canadian heritage. Influenced by the Automatiste movement and impressionism, she explores memory, relationships, and the passage of time through intuitive practice. She received the Gladstone Award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Kate Greenway (@beaglesofballantrae) \u2013<\/em> Kate Greenway works in watercolour, mixed media collage, and glass \u2013 stained, fused and mosaic \u2013 sometimes blurring the distinction between mediums. She completed an award-winning Masters in Arts-Based Research, and a widely exhibited Ph.D. on artistic representations of closed adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Catherine Marshall (@catherinemarshall.art) \u2013<\/em> Catherine Marshall is a visual artist and long-time resident of Aurora. She uses a diversity of mediums and unconventional texture tools to create intriguing paintings. Inspired by nature, emotions, and imagined landscapes, Marshall invites viewers onto a path of exploration. She has exhibited in various galleries including Twist Gallery and Latcham Art Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sheresha McIntyre (@collaji.p.henson) \u2013 <\/em>Artist, photographer, and curator, Sheresha McIntyre works predominantly with analog collage. Her works touch on various themes including fantasy, retro play, and the Black experience, taking form in colourful abstraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Alysha Rocca (@oushies) \u2013<\/em> Alysha Rocca is an emerging artist with a BFA from OCAD University. Exploring feminism and environment consciousness, Rocca&#8217;s practice is rooted in community, sustainability, desire, and consumption through the use of fabric and fibre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Julia Spittel (@juliaspittelartist) \u2013<\/em> For long-time Aurora resident Julia Spittel, nature is at the heart of every work of art she makes.\u00a0 Julia&#8217;s expressive media have evolved over her career from pottery and photography to painting and glass making.\u00a0 Outside of Julia&#8217;s artistic practice, she can be found walking in local forest trails with her Golden Retriever, Ellie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Edward Tsui (@edward_tsui_artist) \u2013<\/em> Based in Thornhill, Edward Tsui studied art in Hong Kong followed by architecture study in the UK. His practice is an exploration of the built environment and how the self responds to architecture.
