A new initiative led by Central York Fire Services will give high school students a chance to gain hands-on experience with local emergency services and learn leadership skills at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trailblazers, an initiative of the CYFS, which serves Aurora and Newmarket, along with the towns themselves, was first conceived last year as a way to engage youth \u2013 specifically high school students \u2013 with the fire department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative recently welcomed its first cohort of 18 students from Aurora and Newmarket to \u201cempower youth with valuable skills and knowledge,\u201d said Azeema Husain, Administrative Assistant (Prevention) for the CYFS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Husain recently presented the initiative in Council Chambers and said its aim is to \u201cshape the next generation of fire service leaders, fostering an environment of learning, respect and public service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCommunity engagement is a cornerstone of the CYFS Youth Volunteer Program,\u201d she said. \u201cBy involving young individuals in fire service, we provide them with hands-on experience that is both educational and practical. This exposure helps them develop critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMentorship plays a key role in the program. Our students will experience an opportunity to talk to fire inspectors, firefighters, York Regional Police officers and EMS to serve as mentors, guiding participants through training and sharing their knowledge. This is not only enhancing the learning experience, but also builds a sense of camaraderie within the fire service community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volunteering in this way, she noted, helps foster a \u201cdeeper understanding\u201d of public safety while \u201cempowering them to become active contributors to their communities while exploring a potential career path in emergency response and public service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donning the uniform of a Trailblazer is not a sartorial choice, she added. Instead, doing so \u201crepresents commitment, professionalism and safety\u201d within fire service training and helps youth volunteers \u201cembody the discipline and team identity crucial to the emergency services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeyond function, the uniform instills a sense of pride and belonging. It symbolizes dedication to the community and fosters unity among Trailblazers, reinforcing their responsibilities as future fire services,\u201d she said. \u201cLeadership and diversity is [at] the heart of the CYFS Youth Volunteer Program. This initiative is designed to instill essential values and provide structured training to young volunteers. Preparing them for potential careers within the emergency services, the program includes comprehensive training in Health and Safety, Equity, Diversity, and inclusion in public education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese topics ensure that all participants develop a well-rounded understanding of Fire Service responsibilities and teamwork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its core are three core pillars: Respect, Explore, and Enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRespect\u201d pertains to the men and women who put on a uniform every day to serve, \u201cExplore\u201d in encouraging youth to discover opportunities within the emergency services, and \u201cEnjoy\u201d \u2013 \u201chelping them find fulfilment in their journey by fostering a culture of inclusion,\u201d said Husain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In getting this first cohort of students into the program, the CYFS reached out to three high schools in Aurora and Newmarket and got a tremendous response. Initially hoping to attract the interest of 15 students, they broadened this threshold to 18 students and hope it only grows from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe envision the Trailblazers program as a transformative experience, equipping youth with essential skills and hands-on training in fire service and community engagement,\u201d said Husain. \u201cMore than just a training initiative, Trailblazers represents a commitment to service. It fosters leadership, teamwork, and public safety awareness, ensuring that their volunteers not only gain knowledge, but also make a meaningful impact within their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLooking ahead, we encourage more individuals to join this movement by participating. By participating, they can become a part of a network of future leaders who will shape the next generation of emergency services, and together we can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
