Liberal newcomer Jennifer McLachlan, who was trying to keep the riding Red following the retirement of long-time Liberal MP Tony Van Bynen, placed second with 29,294 votes. Rounding out the ballot in third place was NDP candidate Anna Gollen with 1,473 votes.

Cobena secured nearly 51 per cent of the vote share in Aurora’s north riding.

In Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, incumbent Liberal MP Leah Taylor Roy was unseated by former Richmond Hill Conservative MP Costas Menegakis.

Menegakis, who served under Prime Minister Stephen Harper from 2011-2015, received 32,518 votes, well ahead of Taylor Roy who secured 26,461 votes.

Also on the ballot, Green Party candidate Tom Muench got 1,769 votes, the NDP’s Danielle Maniuk 834, and People’s Party of Canada’s Igor Tvorogov 255.

It was a somewhat bittersweet night for local Conservatives. While they secured Aurora’s two ridings, they went home in the early hours of Tuesday morning with their hopes of forming government dashed and leader Pierre Poilievre forecasted to be left without a seat with the riding of Carleton flipping Liberal Bruce Fanjoy.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh also lost his seat to the Liberals, announcing his intention to resign as leader once an interim replacement is chosen, following the party’s poor showing.

By Brock Weir

Aurora’s Federal ridings went decisively towards the Conservatives on Monday night as Canadians from coast to coast elected a Liberal government under Prime Minister Mark Carney.
