Shaolin Martial Arts recognizes its nine Ontario Winter Games medalists<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Tom Mrakas presented Town of Aurora pins for excellence in athletics to nine Ontario Winter Games medalists from the Shaolin Martial Arts Canada youth team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ceremony\u2014moderated by Head Coach (or \u201cShifu\u201d) Tim Wakefield — took place on Saturday morning at the Shaolin studio (or \u201cwushu guan\u201d) on Mary Street in Aurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After congratulating each of the medalists, Mayor Mrakas expressed \u201chow proud he was of these young athletes who not only worked to get better and won medals, but they also did it on a big stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredible to see such excellent results in their first provincial competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ontario Winter Games took place in Renfrew on February 9-12 and the nine medalists were proudly displaying their hardware during the group photo with Mayor Mrakas and the Shaolin coaching staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most decorated performer among Shaolin\u2019s Ontario Games medal winners was Ron Picklas who captured two Gold medals in \u201cChinese Kickboxing (Sanda)\u201d and in \u201cTraditional Form–Hand and Weapon\u201d \u2013 both in the U12 Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picklas enjoyed his experience with the 147 martial arts competitors at the Winter Games in Renfrew and noted that \u201cit was fun meeting everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked about winning two gold medals at the provincial event, he nodded: \u201cIt\u2019s cool to win.  It was amazing because it all came together after two months of going at it and preparing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Picklas noted that his singular sporting focus on martial arts has been beneficial in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe main benefit is good health, but it also provides a mindset that drives you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shifu Wakefield also acknowledged the benefits of his martial arts program such as \u201ckeeping the mind clear in the present moments\u201d and \u201chelping our participants deal with adversity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coach Master felt his team\u2019s excellent showing in Renfrew was \u201cvery validating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always great to see your students win and compete. The medals were the icing on the cake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wakefield said he was pleasantly surprised by his team\u2019s inaugural appearance at the provincial championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was our first time at the Ontario Summer Games and we weren\u2019t sure what to expect.  It was great to see them hold their own at a high caliber event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaching partner Rocco Colarossi echoed Wakefield\u2019s remarks about his team\u2019s performance at a province-wide event and said he was impressed by \u201cthe calmness they showed on the mat as well as the timing they showed, and the skill they displayed at the Games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shaolin\u2019s other Gold Medal Winners included Jayden Deshong in Sanda in 13-15 Class D and Jordan Hong in Traditional Form in the 13+ Division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following martial artists were recognized by Mayor Mrakas and the Shaolin Coaching Staff on Saturday morning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U12 Class D Ron Piklas \u2013 Gold; 13-15 Class D Jaydan Deshong –  Gold; Jordan Hing \u2013 Silver;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13-15 Class C  Adam Pillars Resolver; 13-15 Hi Perf Class C Kian Moosavi \u2013 Bronze;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16+ Hi perf Class B Daniel Wakefield \u2013 Silver; Special mention to Jeremy Lind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Traditional Form or hand and weapon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U12.   Ron Piklas \u2013 Gold; Jeremy Lind \u2013 Bronze; 13+    Jordan Hong \u2013 Gold, Adam Pillars \u2013 Silver, and Hayden Fishing \u2013 Bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next major martial arts competition for the Shaolin squad is August 3-6 at the Pan-American Games to be held at the Pan-Am Centre in Markham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
