Over the course of 2020, more than 8,000 area women and men were given a hand by Abuse Hurts with planting down new roots after fleeing troubling situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might seem like a lot \u2013 and it is certainly nothing to sneeze at \u2013 but 2020 was anything but a normal year. If it were, the number of people receiving help from the local non-profit Abuse Hurts would have been significantly higher, and they\u2019re back on track to delivering assistance where it is needed most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching these higher figures is not an objective of Abuse Hurts \u2013 after all, not having to provide this kind of assistance of any kind is the ultimate goal of any like organization \u2013 but numbers are on the rise once again and thanks to your help, and the help from Magna International, they are able to rise to the occasion and meet the new realities of the new normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abuse Hurts, founded in 1993, is aimed at reducing the \u201cincidence and impact of abuse through education and public awareness.\u201d Raising awareness about the true cost of neglect and abuse within the community, they not only provide supportive and healing programs for those leaving abuse, but deliver furnishings, appliances and other essentials to women and men who are setting up much-needed new homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization was recently named one of 30 recipients of the Magna Hoedown Community Fund, which was established earlier this year to support charities that would have otherwise benefited from the fundraising efforts of the Magna Hoedown, an event which was cancelled for the second year running in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this much-needed cash infusion, Abuse Hurts will be able to provide new mattresses for people seeking their services, along with new pillows, new bedding, and sourcing other important items needed to get back on their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re able to buy items we can\u2019t take as donations,\u201d says Abuse Hurts founder Ellen Campbell, referencing mattresses as a particular item of interest. \u201cFor example, if we have an order and we\u2019re able to fill everything but we don\u2019t have a toaster oven, now we can go out and buy a toaster oven. We\u2019re able to subsidize what we don\u2019t have. We\u2019re going to be able to buy, and that is huge for us. It has always been a problem when even if we can provide the bed and the rails [through donation] we can\u2019t give our clients a used mattress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Hoedown funds also help us with emergency funding. For instance, we recently had a First Nations lady who just left a situation that was pretty drastic up north. We can\u2019t send furniture up there, so we sent money so she could shop at the Salvation Army. There\u2019s more that the emergency funding can do; we can buy gas cards, pharmacy cards because we\u2019ve had some cases where women need medication and have to decide between medication and food, and baby items that we can\u2019t have used like a crib.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the items that the community has \u2013 and continues to donate \u2013 are essential for Abuse Hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now based in Newmarket after a long stint in Aurora, they are now able to re-open their space for donations of everything from furniture and textiles that can help set people on the right path. Even electronic donations are being accepted, which Abuse Hurts is able to recycle and turn into cash which is then folded back into emergency funding. It\u2019s all part of their Full Circle program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the pandemic, women who might have been able to slip out and go to Tim\u2019s to meet with a counsellor isn\u2019t so easy,\u201d says Ms. Campbell. \u201cWe don\u2019t get the calls directly; all of ours come through an agency. They will say, \u2018Don\u2019t call me back. Don\u2019t text me.\u2019 They have to keep reaching out to the shelter when it is safe because they are stuck at home with their perpetrator. The other troubling thing [we\u2019ve seen] is there are hardly any calls for children, but the problem is kids aren\u2019t at school and they are trapped. There is no chance to report. There is not a lot of child abuse cases reported because they aren\u2019t able to tell their teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe numbers have just gone up through the pandemic. There is definitely a greater need and now that we\u2019re in a different stage, I am hoping we\u2019ll be able to reach more people. You can\u2019t wait two months or a month and you don\u2019t have a pot or bedding in your apartment. We would get the order and deliver it, or someone would pick it up. Now that we\u2019re in Step 3, women will be able to come in and pick up their stuff, which is the best. We didn\u2019t realize as soon as we said we were open for donations, we filled up the warehouse fast. Now we don\u2019t have room for a lot more furniture [we can share with groups like 360 Kids] and we want to aggressively let people know we have furniture here \u2013 we would really love to start getting furniture out to people who really need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
