{"id":26951,"date":"2020-07-09T22:04:23","date_gmt":"2020-07-10T02:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=26951"},"modified":"2020-07-09T22:04:29","modified_gmt":"2020-07-10T02:04:29","slug":"siblings-raise-their-hands-in-support-of-community-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/siblings-raise-their-hands-in-support-of-community-living\/","title":{"rendered":"Siblings \u201cRaise their Hands\u201d in support of Community Living"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In\nthe weeks following COVID-19 closures, Meghan and Kate Beswick missed school\nand their friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As\nthey sat around their kitchen table, the siblings felt lonely, and by\nextension, empathetic towards those who were in facilities like Community\nLiving Central York (CLCY) that had to be closed for safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\nfeeling of empathy soon transformed into a campaign called Raising Our Hands\n2020, which ended in the delivery of special boxes of medical supplies, arts\nand crafts to 130 Community Living residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCommunity\nLiving is an organization close to our hearts that provides support to\nindividuals with intellectual disabilities in our community and helps them\nreach their greatest potential. With facilities closed to residents like our\naunt Joan and cousin Brad, Community Living was in urgent need of PPE supplies,\ndisinfectant, crafts and more. We wanted to join their initiative and \u2018Raise\nOur Hands\u2019 to give our friends in isolation a fun way to pass their time and\ncelebrate the amazing work of the organization,\u201d said 19-year-old Kate, the\neldest of the siblings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having\nseen first-hand the depth of services CLCY provides for those with\ndevelopmental disabilities, the Beswicks said they wanted to help spread some\nsmiles and cheer amongst the residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\nhad to close their facilities, and our friends are isolated. Just the way we\nhave been missing school and our friends, we have a little bit of a feeling of\nhow lonely it can be,\u201d explained Jack, 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the help of Capital\nInfrastructure Group and members of the community, the family hand-packed each\nof the 130 boxes, including a Raising Our Hands t-shirt and supplies for all\nresidents to decorate as their own, a decorate-your-own cookie kit and toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach\nresident had one week to decorate their t-shirt and celebrate their friends and\nthe staff at Community Living Central York,\u201d said 18-year-old Meghan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On\nJune 13, the family gathered at the Aurora Community Centre Parking Lot, and invited&nbsp;all\nCLCY residents to their drive-by parade&nbsp;to celebrate the staff and\nresidents, with everyone dressed in their decorated shirts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ncampaign itself raised around $10,000 but it brought much more in happiness and\nfriendship to the residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMuch\nas it was about raising funds, it was really about raising our hands and\nhelping our vulnerable friends that have been isolated for so long.
