Magna\u2019s global headquarters will stay in Aurora for the\nforeseeable future, the automotive giant announced last Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having previously announced in 2015 their decision to\nmove operations to King Township by 2017, their future in Aurora \u2013 and York\nRegion \u2013 has been subject to considerable speculation in recent years, fuelled\nby their decision to delay the move and, later, the subsequent sale of lands originally\npurchased in King to accommodate a purpose-built campus for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current deal will keep Magna in Aurora for more than\nfive additional years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Town of Aurora is pleased to announce that the Executive\nLeadership Team for\u2026Magna International has announced that they have decided to\nmaintain their global headquarters in Aurora by signing an extension to their\ncurrent lease,\u201d said the Town of Aurora in a statement last week. \u201cSince\nopening its doors in 1997, Magna has been part of the fabric of Aurora for\ndecades. As the company considered its long-term plan for its headquarters,\nmany options were explored. After careful consideration, the Executive Team\ndetermined that Aurora remained an ideal location, enhanced by the\nlong-standing relationship Magna has had with the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mayor Tom Mrakas said in a statement the Town is\n\u201cgrateful\u201d to have Magna stay on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are grateful to have Magna as one of our premier\ncorporate businesses,\u201d he said. \u201cMagna has helped Aurora maintain a high\nprofile in the global economy and has been a significant contributor to our\nlocal community through events like the Magna Hoedown and programs such as\nNeighbourhood Network. I want to thank the senior team at Magna for their\ncontinued commitment to the Town of Aurora. This is welcome news to Council and\nresidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magna CEO Don Walker, in turn, thanked Mayor Mrakas for\nhis efforts as Magna reviewed their future within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter an extensive evaluation, we felt it was in the\nbest interest of our stakeholders to remain in the Aurora community,\u201d said Mr.\nWalker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping Magna in Aurora has been a top priority for the\nmunicipality since the company first announced its plan to move elsewhere in\n2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, it has been a focus of the Mayor\u2019s Office\nand, in the last term of Council, a focus for the Town\u2019s Economic Development\nAdvisory Committee. With the winding down of that Committee in favour of a\nnewly-constituted Economic Development Board, Magna\u2019s retention has fallen\nlargely under the purview of the Mayor\u2019s office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is something that was big for me as soon as I took\noffice, thinking of how do we retain Magna and make sure they stay within the\ncommunity,\u201d Mayor Mrakas told The Auroran following Wednesday\u2019s announcement.\n\u201cWe worked through the process of why Aurora should be the place they stay in\nand why they should be committed to the Town. They agreed and I am happy for\nit. I think the whole Town is excited that Magna will be here for a long time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think [this shows] that our Town, globally, we\u2019re\nrecognized for having probably one of the biggest automotive giants\u2019\nheadquarters here in our Town and they have chosen to stay here. I think that\nspeaks volumes about our Town and there is excitement that this is not only\ngoing to benefit us from our working relationship with Magna but it also shows\nthe world that Aurora is here, we\u2019re on the map, and other global enterprises\nwill start possibly moving here, which is what we\u2019re working towards: to showcase\nour Town, say how great we are, and why these global business leaders should\npossibly move headquarters here to the Town of Aurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is just another example of a global business that\nsays, \u2018Hey, this Town is a great place to be,\u2019 and I think it speaks volumes to\nour Town, our community, and I think everyone should be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, ahead of the Mayor\u2019s annual address to\nthe Aurora Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Mrakas teased his speech would contain a\n\u201cbig announcement\u201d but, shortly before he was due to give the address, the\nannouncement in question had to be moved to the backburner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That announcement, he conceded last week, was the retention of Magna International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
