Asia and Bradshaw Sinkovic have become a formidable\nmusical duo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past month, the Aurora siblings \u2013 with Asia on\nvocals and Bradshaw on drums \u2013 have been performing in their Hollandview Trail\ndriveway, attracting neighbours and passers-by for their Friday night jams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, this impromptu concert has not only become a\nweekly tradition for residents in the neighbourhood, but a way for the community\nas a whole to give back to local residents in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their audiences numbered at just a handful when they first\ncame outside to flex their musical muscles, but these numbers have swelled with\neach passing week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a few weeks ago, the double act became a temporary\ntrio when a York Region Paramedic, guitar in hand, joined in the fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne Friday, it was pretty cold so instead of performing,\nI thought I would come outside and bang some pots instead of setting up to\nperform,\u201d says Bradshaw. \u201cI started to bang and I saw there was a paramedic\nsupervisor [on the street] saying something. I stopped and he asked if we were\nplaying that night. I said we weren\u2019t planning on it, and he said, \u2018Could you?\nWe have eight other ambulances and a bus coming over.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their audience was more than just a handful or two that\nparticular week; off-duty ambulances lined the street to take in the\nperformance, and Friday night jams are going from strength to strength,\nevolving from just an evening of music to a musical evening for a cause \u2013 the\nAurora Food Pantry \u2013 where music lovers are encouraged to bring food donations\nto each performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aurora Food Pantry was selected as the recipient\ncharity by Bradshaw after researching the needs facing Aurora residents at this\ndifficult time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe had been doing this for more than a month before we\ncame up with the idea of doing it for the Food Pantry,\u201d says Asia, a student at\nRichmond Hill\u2019s Alexander Mackenzie High School. \u201cWe wanted to give back to our\ncommunity not only in a musical way but also being able to provide something\nbecause COVID-19 has brought a lot of homes down financially and they aren\u2019t\nable to get food. We really wanted to give back to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Bradshaw picked the charity after researching needs\nfacing Aurora residents as a result of the pandemic, they are also performing\nfor a reason that hits very close to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the microphone and drum kit are put away, their\nbackdrop remains in place \u2013 a hockey net draped in the Canadian flag emblazoned\nwith a sign thanking frontline workers for the work they are doing every day to\nfight the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only is their next-door neighbour a frontline worker\nin their capacity as a paramedic, Asia and Bradshaw\u2019s mother, Chandra, is a\npalliative care nurse at Southlake Regional Health Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am very proud of my mom,\u201d says Asia. \u201cI am honoured to\nperform and make signs because it is helping people like her. It is empowering\nfor me and it\u2019s for her and the entire community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adds Bradshaw: \u201cIt makes me feel really glad I am able to\ndo something to brighten people\u2019s spirits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is something to brighten everybody\u2019s spirits\neach Friday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The siblings take pride in the fact their loose musical\nprograms offer something for everyone. They come by these eclectic musical tastes\nhonestly, growing up with parents who never shied away from exposing them to\nthe classics, everything from 1950s pop, to Led Zeppelin, and even to\nNickelback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to bring genres of music that everyone enjoys,\nso everyone gets a taste of everything,\u201d says Asia, an active member at Marquee\nTheatrical Productions who, until the pandemic forced its cancellation, was\npoised to tread the boards in an upcoming production of West Side Story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have some songs that people might not always hear,\nand some songs that everyone knows,\u201d adds Bradshaw, noting he is particularly\ninto \u201cprog-rock\u201d and, as a drummer, takes his cues from late Rush drummer Neil\nPeart. \u201cHe was a big influence on the style of what I do. I want to drum\nprofessionally for my career, so this is a great way to get myself out there\nand give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To take in the Friday night jam sessions, grab something to donate to the Aurora Food Pantry and head over to 237 Hollandview Trail for 7 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the siblings perform on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
