{"id":26624,"date":"2020-05-28T19:19:52","date_gmt":"2020-05-28T23:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=26624"},"modified":"2020-06-04T18:30:46","modified_gmt":"2020-06-04T22:30:46","slug":"outbreak-at-chartwell-aurora-shows-signs-of-easing-as-resolved-cases-top-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/outbreak-at-chartwell-aurora-shows-signs-of-easing-as-resolved-cases-top-35\/","title":{"rendered":"Outbreak at Chartwell Aurora shows signs of easing as resolved cases top 35"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of active cases of COVID-19 at Chartwell\nAurora (Resthaven) has begun to ease, according to data released this week by\nthe Region of York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, the Region posted encouraging figures from\nChartwell Aurora which is, at press time Aurora\u2019s only institutional outbreak\nof the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By May 26, the long-term care residence was grappling\nwith five active cases and 37 resolved cases of COVID-19, down significantly\nfrom 38 active cases on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chartwell Aurora has experienced a total of 53 cases of\nCOVID-19 since their outbreak was declared by the Region in April, with eleven\ndeaths among residents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aurora-wide, there were 14 active cases of COVID-19 as of\nTuesday with 74 cases marked as resolved. 13 residents, including eleven\nresidents of Chartwell Aurora, have lost their battle with the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Region reports a total of 101 confirmed Aurora cases\nsince the start of the outbreak. Of these, 53 cases are related to the\ninstitutional outbreak, 24 to close contact, 11 to local transmission, 10 to\ntravel and 2 to workplace outbreak. A further single case remains under\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of Aurora\u2019s 101 cumulative cases at press time, 30 are\nreported amongst people 80 years of age or over, 19 between the ages of 65 and\n79, 10 between 45 and 54, eight between 35 and 44, 12 between 20 and 24, 3\nbetween 5 and 19, and just 1 case amongst children 5 and under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">York Region Public Health has also confirmed a case of\nCOVID-19 in a staff member who works at Walmart located at First Commerce Drive\nand Wellington Street East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Patrick Casey, Director of Corporate\nCommunications for the Region, the individual in question is self-isolating at\nhome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe individual was not infectious while at work as their\nsymptoms started May 20 and the individual\u2019s last day of work was May 17,\n2020,\u201d Casey told The Auroran. \u201cYork Region Public Health conducted case and\ncontact tracing activities to identify any other close contacts, including\nhousehold contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we receive a notification of a confirmed COVID-19\ncase, York Region Public Health\u2019s case investigation activities start quickly\nto determine possible source of illness and risk of transmission to other close\ncontacts. We have dedicated teams investigating workplace-related cases to\nensure contact tracing is completed as quickly as possible and infection\nprevention and control measures are\/were in place at the business while the\nindividual was working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYork Region Public Health will continue to monitor this\nworkplace to determine if there are any additional cases for 14 days after the\nlast case was identified and, in this situation, monitoring will continue until\nJune 3.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHITTING PAUSE\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, Dr. Kurji, York Region\u2019s Chief Medical\nOfficer of Health, said he was optimistic of trends, stating, \u201cMany of our\n(long-term care and congregate living) outbreaks have come under control,\nalthough there are a few that are posting unusual challenges.\u201d By Monday, as\nnumbers across York Region and Ontario saw an uptick over the weekend, he was\nmore cautious. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur downward trajectory of cases seems to have hit a\npause button,\u201d said Dr. Kurji. \u201cWhen we look more carefully, it appears that\nthe larger number of cases can be attributed to outbreaks in long-term care\nhomes that have still not come under control. In addition, we are seeing an\nupswing in the number of outbreaks in workplace settings. The number now having\ngone to over 40.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two most recent examples of workplace outbreaks in\nYork Region are both in Vaughan, with 21 confirmed cases reported at the UPS\nplant on Steeles Avenue West and Aluminum Window Designs. 21 confirmed cases of\nCOVID-19 were reported among UPS workers at the start of the week, two of whom\nlive in York Region. Aluminum Window Designs is experiencing 26 confirmed\ncases, none of whom live in the Region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A THANKS TO CHARTWELL STAFF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, frontline workers at Chartwell Aurora\nreceived a welcome visit from members of the Aurora Lions Club who provided\nmeals to the heroes working day and night to keep senior residents safe during\nthe emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Lions&nbsp;Club International\nFoundation (LCIF), the charity arm of&nbsp;Lions&nbsp;Club\nInternational have donated almost $4 million USD as a response to the COVID-19\noutbreak,\u201d said Aurora Lion Jim Bondy. \u201cDistrict A-16, which includes an area\nbordered by Halliburton to Oshawa and Markham to Keswick, has received a\n$10,000 USD Grant for support of frontline workers at long-term care facilities\nthat have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Executive of the District have divided this amount into the four Regions. Region 18, which includes Aurora to Stouffville and Markham to Maple, has been making deliveries of food, snacks, fruit and beverages to frontline workers at a number of long-term care facilities.
