It started out just as a project to do something useful for\nher family and friends in her downtime, but word of mouth helped Robin Taylor\nSmith take her kitchen-table mask-sewing efforts to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of last week, she had lost count of just how\nmany masks she and her husband, Greg, had completed, but estimated it was in\nthe neighbourhood of 500, making her more than 60 per cent of her way to\nraising $10,000 for local non-profits, including the Aurora Food Pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first I was delivering them to everybody, making them\nfor friends and family, and I was getting a lot of people who said, \u2018We have to\ngive you some money.\u2019 I said I didn\u2019t want any money, but people were hounding\nme,\u201d says Robin. \u201cSo, Greg and I finally said, \u2018Let\u2019s just make a donation.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As donations started to roll in through an e-transfer\naccount, they set a modest fundraising goal. But those goalposts moved\naccording to demand \u2013 and a matching donation from the Oddfellows, a local\nservice club based near Yonge and Wellington, of which Greg is a member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am absolutely flabbergasted, it is a lot of money \u2013 I\ndidn\u2019t expect this result and it has blown me away,\u201d she says. \u201cWe determined\n$10,000 after we got the first $1,000 and I jokingly suggested $10,000, not\nreally thinking we would get there as quickly as we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In many respects, it has been a community effort as\nfriends have loaned tools such as rotary cutters and scissors for the mask-making\neffort, while individuals and organizations, including the Alzheimer Society of\nYork Region, have contributed material to the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen all this is done, I am hoping to do two or three\ndonations and make it a substantial donation to each instead of just a myriad\nof organizations,\u201d says Robin. \u201cThe Food Pantry is top of my list because every\ntime I see the list, their needs are increasing by the day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, will the mask-making continue once the $10,000 goal\nhas been reached?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think I will still keep going \u2013 but maybe not be at it\neight hours a day!\u201d Robin laughs. \u201cMaybe I\u2019ll do it two or thee days a week,\nsee how many get made and deliver them to whoever wants them. Right now, the\norders are coming in and the masks are going out!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
