{"id":26334,"date":"2020-04-09T18:46:12","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T22:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=26334"},"modified":"2020-04-09T18:46:17","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T22:46:17","slug":"water-price-hike-flushed-in-response-to-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/water-price-hike-flushed-in-response-to-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Water price hike flushed in response to COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Planned increases to local water bills have been delayed\nby the Region in response to the COVID-19 emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional Council formally voted to keep water and\nwastewater rates at their 2019 levels at a remote Council meeting held last\nThursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2015, Council approved a User Rate Study that\nincluded six years of rate increases, including a nine per cent increase that\nwas scheduled to take effect on April 1, 2020,\u201d said York staff in a report\nbefore Regional Council last week. \u201cA bylaw to enact the April 1, 2020 increase\nis tracking to Council at the end of April. Several local Councils have\napproved the deferral of their planned 2020 Water and Wastewater Rate increases\nand others are waiting for a decision from the Region before deciding on their\nown course of action. To align with local action and to provide fiscal relief\nthat could be passed on to residents and businesses, staff recommend that the\nRegion defer their scheduled nine per cent tax increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStaff would report back to Council to provide detailed\nimplications of deferring the planned rate increase. Preliminary analysis\nsuggests that the rate deferral would result in lost revenue of about $25\nmillion. It could also jeopardize the planned timeline for achieving full cost\nrecovery.
