If you\u2019ve explored every last inch of your home during\nthis time of self-isolation, there\u2019s a whole digital world to explore via the Aurora\nPublic Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and closures of\npublic spaces across Ontario, the Aurora Public Library (APL) has launched a\ndigital library card service to enable more residents than ever before to access\nthe myriad online services they continue to provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Membership at the APL is free to all who live, work,\nattend school or own property in any York Region municipality, and by heading\nover to the APL\u2019s website at aurorapl.ca and filling out a brief form, you will\nbe able to access all online programming within 72 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne of the things we have done in the short-term is\nbringing forward the ability for people who don\u2019t already have a library card\nto go online and get temporary digital cards,\u201d explains Bruce Gorman, CEO of\nthe Aurora Public Library. \u201cYou can use that card to take advantage of any of\nour online services right then and there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These online services are not limited simply to e-books\nand audio books; through a wide variety of programs and services, holders of\ndigital library cards can stream movies, access public services, and even take\nonline courses to acquire new skills \u2013 or brush up on some dustier ones \u2013 in\nthis time of isolation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great place to spend quality time while we\u2019re all\nat home and doing the right thing by staying at home,\u201d says Gorman. \u201cIt is a\ngreat way to spend some time with yourself learning, or your kids too. There\u2019s\nlots of opportunity for the public to spend some time at the Aurora Public\nLibrary at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before COVID-19 began gaining a foothold in Ontario, the\nLibrary was already well-positioned in the realm of digital services. As the\nsituation rapidly developed, Library staffers knew that strengthening their\nonline outreach would be critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resources include the APL\u2019s Cloud Library, which offers\nhundreds of thousands of e-books and audio books, Hoopla, which streams\ncountless movies and TV shows, Tumblebooks \u2013 a collection of animated online\nkids\u2019 books, language learning through Little Pim and Mango, and LinkedIn\nlearning courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a great opportunity,\u201d says Gorman. \u201cI have heard\nthis quite a bit in recent days\u2026people talking about how to spend their time\ndoing different things and trying out different things, and this is a neat\nopportunity to try something new. Through LinkedIn learning, there are over\n14,000 online courses you can take, things like software development,\nleadership and business courses, and these are all free through the Aurora\nPublic Library. Once this has subsided and we come back to some normalcy,\nyou\u2019ll have a new skill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have been taking advantage of some of the leadership\ncourses to hone my skills and I know some of our other staff have been taking\nunique courses that are maybe not something they would normally take, or take a\ndifferent spin on something, look at something they wouldn\u2019t normally look\nlike. Everyone at the Library, we have access to these programs and our staff\ntake advantage of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since ramping up their digital library card program last\nweek, Gorman says there has been a positive uptake from the community and\nregistration numbers continue to rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce you\u2019re exposed to our wonderful digital world, you\nwill have a whole host of new opportunities to look at it,\u201d he says. \u201cI would\nencourage everyone to go and if you don\u2019t have a card, please come to our\nwebsite and we will give you a digital card in just a day or so \u2013 and explore\nall these great learning opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we are all attempting to do our best by staying home as much as possible, please leave your library books at home with you. You don\u2019t have to return them and we will be waiving any fines or fees, so stay home, stay safe with your family, and open up the Aurora Public Library\u2019s digital world to you and your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
