\u201cA high-energy, fast-paced soul and rock and roll\nextravaganza,\u201d laughs singer-songwriter Samantha Martin. Having just been asked\nto give audiences a bit of a teaser on what she and her band Delta Sugar plan\nto bring to Theatre Aurora later this month when they hit Town, the\nJuno-nominated singer gets as far as \u201cextravaganza\u201d before ultimately deciding\na teaser might spoil it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no idea how to explain it!\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, you\u2019re just going to have to come out on March 20 and\nsee for yourself at the opening of the annual Aurora Winter Blues Festival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Aurora Winter Blues Festival opens the Festival,\nalongside Glenn Marais and his Mojo Train band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA dynamic frontwoman, she possesses a stunning voice that can summon up tidal waves of spine-tingling emotion in one instance while delicately bringing out the nuances of a gut-wrenching lyric in the next,\u201d say festival organizers of Ms. Martin. \u201cA torrid force of nature, night after night she takes audiences to emotional peaks while leaving them stunned with her sheer pin-you-against-the-wall power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Samantha Martin & Delta Sugar is a hot commodity\nafter their nomination at the 2018 Juno Awards, which has left their dance\ncards pretty full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe nomination definitely elevated our profile in the\nCanadian music scene,\u201d says Ms. Martin. \u201cPeople who may not have heard of us\nbefore or saw our name in the category and being nominated for a Juno means\nyou\u2019re in the Top Five according to your peers. It was definitely a wonderful\nthing to be recognized that way; people are impressed by it, which is wonderful\n\u2013 I was impressed by it! It is definitely a career elevator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Delta Sugar was born in 2013. Initially, it was a group\nof just vocals and guitar, performing as a four-piece band. The group expanded\nover the years and now often performs as a band of seven or ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew I always wanted a larger sound, but it is quite\ndifficult to tour the larger bands, it\u2019s more money for expenses, so we made\nthe decision to do it as a four-piece,\u201d says Ms. Martin. \u201cNobody else was doing\nit, so we stood out. In 2018, we released the (Juno-nominated) Run to Me and\nexpanded the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBoth musically and in the writing process, my focus has\nalways been vocals and melodies and I centre a lot of the music around my\nvocals and the backing vocals. When I am writing a new song for the record, I\nalways keep in mind: what are the backup vocals going to do here? Everything\nelse becomes secondary focus, equally as important, but I like a lot of space\nin the music. I don\u2019t like to just be a wall of sound all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a winning formula, but also one which has helped her\ncreate music that is both deeply personal yet universally accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like my inspiration for writing is usually the\nability to stay still a little bit because we have been on a lot of crazy tours\nlately and I was having writers\u2019 block, but mostly because I couldn\u2019t slow\nmyself down enough to go inside to find the words in which I wanted to say, the\nstory I wanted to tell,\u201d she explains. \u201cWhen I write, I need quiet and I need\nto be still and reflective. The last two records have been about relationships,\nwhether they be romantic relationships, relationships with family members and\nall that kind of stuff. I tend to write about experiences that I know and\nthings that have happened to me, or things I have experienced but I hope I do\nit in such a way that is not too specific, so that it can be relatable. There\nare stories behind the songs but I try and write them in such a way that they\nare relatable and applicable to many different situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of their upcoming Aurora gig, Samantha Martin &\nDelta Sugar are putting the finishing touches on their new album, The Reckless\nOne, which is expected to drop this Spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll be playing a lot of songs off the new album coming\nat the show,\u201d she teases. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be touring Europe in May and June and\nwe\u2019re excited to share some of the music we\u2019ve got cooking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
