Every day, women in\nYork Region put their trust in Dr. Kira Tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A resident of\nAurora, the anesthesiologist at Southlake Regional Health Centre has dedicated\nher life and career to practicing health care in her community, driven to have\na positive impact on the place she calls home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next month, she is\ntaking this community commitment to a decidedly different level \u2013 as a runway\nmodel for a spring fashion show hosted by local boutique Oakridge Fashions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Be Beautiful\nSpring Fashion Show is set to take place at the newly restored Aurora Armoury,\nhome of Niagara College\u2019s Canadian Food & Wine Institute, on April 2, and\nit is billed as
\na way to showcase \u201cthe looks of spring and the gift of\nhope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While a spring\nfashion show is a staple of Oakridge, they are taking their show on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis, to my mind,\nis not just a fashion show \u2013 I can do that every day \u2013 but I wanted the story\nto be more holistic and that is the story of us as partners,\u201d says Deb Clark,\nowner of Oakridge, referring to the Southlake Regional Health Centre\nFoundation. \u201cWhen the audience learns that one of our models does something\ndistinctly different on her day job, I think it really\namps up the message in a big way and it says, \u2018Okay, this is important. If this\nbusy woman here can find time in her schedule to get outfitted, get into\nfashion, and get up on the stage, I think it elevates the importance of this\nissue, and that is really what I want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a view shared by Dr. Tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Tone\u2019s involvement with the Southlake\nRegional Health Centre Foundation covers many different areas, but she has a\nparticular interest in their Women\u2019s Health Initiative, which serves to raise\nawareness of issues surrounding \u2013 and spur dialogue on \u2013women\u2019s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Women\u2019s Health Initiative was launched\nby Southlake last fall to highlight unique care needs in the community. The\nhospital currently needs more than $6 million to meet women\u2019s health needs,\nincluding new and replacement equipment for advanced cardiac, breast cancer,\ngynaecological care and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needs include magnetic breast seeds, which\nhelp guide surgeons to accurately locate tumours, and new mammography machines,\nwhich allow patients to directly control the paddles that position the breast\nfor imaging, while also allowing women to manage their own breast compression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proceeds from the Be Beautiful Spring\nFashion Show will help Southlake towards their goal of purchasing three of\nthese new mammography machines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRelinquishing control for anything is\nhard and that is what patients do when they come to the hospital for any health\ncare, but particularly in my field, women and men come into the OR and they\nhave to give up control to me and have faith I am going to put them to sleep\nsafely, wake them up safely. Giving up that control is scary,\u201d says Dr. Tone.\n\u201cBut, if you give them back that control as much as we can, it becomes a little\nless scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adds Susan Mullin, President & CEO of\nthe Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation: \u201cA number of women become very\nanxious about having to have a mammogram and it is one of the key diagnostic\ntools in screening for breast cancer. What studies have shown is by introducing\nself-compression, women are more inclined to keep their appointments and get\nthat screening. The other thing that studies show is women, on occasion, will\nactually apply greater compression than a technician would, creating better\nquality images.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Clark knows this reality all too well.\nHaving put off her own mammogram, she eventually received a diagnosis.\nThankfully, her cancer, a particularly aggressive kind, was caught early and\nwas dealt with, but the experience underscored to her the importance of early\ndetection. And having the means of early detection close to home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the Women\u2019s Health Initiative is\nmore than fundraising; it is awareness-raising,\u201d says Ms. Clark. \u201cWhen you\nraise awareness about the kinds of things women may not have thought were on\nthe Women\u2019s Health agenda, you do more than raise funds, you save lives.\nThere\u2019s an awful lot of people in Ontario\nwho don\u2019t understand that the funding of our hospitals is not coming straight\nfrom the government. It is so important to build awareness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Be Beautiful\nSpring Fashion Show will take place at the restored Armoury on Thursday, April\n2. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased from Oakridge Fashions at 14800 Yonge\nStreet or by calling 905-716-4063. Doors open at 6 p.m., and, in addition to a\nfashion show modeled by more than a dozen models, many of whom have been drawn\nfrom the Southlake community, ticket-holders will get a behind-the-scenes look\nat the CFWI, sample their culinary treats, and be invited back to Oakridge\nfollowing the show to purchase the items they have seen on the runaway. A\nportion of all proceeds will benefit the Southlake Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Models hitting the\nrunway span the ages of 25 to 87 and sizes small to double XL because, in the\nwords of Ms. Clark, \u201cstyle has no size.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of breast\ncancer patients are post-mastectomy or post-double mastectomy and a lot of them\ndon\u2019t have reconstruction for multiple reasons,\u201d says Dr. Tone. \u201cFashion is a\nway for them to feel confident in themselves. I have devoted my life and career\nto healthcare, but, for me, to see someone in our community who devotes her\ntime, her money, her efforts, that takes away from her family and her busy\nlife, it is pretty incredible to know we have that kind of community backing,\nthat Southlake means as much to people in our community as it does to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I do every day \u2013 I love it, I love my job, but it is nice to have people like Deb supporting us, because we need it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
