Women and children fleeing abuse in York Region have a\nnew helping hand with Shelter Movers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelter Movers, a national organization that provides\nfree moving and storage services to women and children fleeing abuse, has\nhelped nearly 1,100 families in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Halifax since\nits inception in 2016, and, on Monday, formally launched their services in York\nRegion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partnered with the York Region Centre for Community\nSafety (YRCCS), Shelter Movers is the only organization in the country\nproviding free moving and storage services for individuals fleeing abuse. The\nservice is accessed by a referral from an agency or shelter and, once that\nreferral has been made, Shelter Movers connects with the client and the\nreferring agency to plan moving logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They consider the needs of each individual, including\nstorage, pet fostering and translation services and, with the help of community\nbusiness partners, securing storage units for those leaving violent situations\nis often provided free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt Shelter Movers, we often say violence against women\nis not a women\u2019s issue; violence against women is, in many ways, a men\u2019s\nissue,\u201d said Marc Hull-Jacquin, Executive Director of Shelter Movers, speaking\nto community partners gathered for the York Region launch at Aw, Shucks on\nMonday afternoon. \u201cThis is about men hurting women. Do women hurt men? Yes,\nthey do, and that\u2019s terrible, we support men and have moved men, but we try to\ncall this out for what it is. We have an opportunity to bring together men and\nwomen under the same umbrella to help solve this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn York Region only a few years ago \u2013 and these are only\nthe reported cases \u2013 5,300 cases of intimate partner violence [were reported] in\nYork Region, increasing year over year. In Canada last year, there were over\n93,000 cases \u2013 again, only the reported cases \u2013 and Shelter Movers has\ncompleted about 1,100 moves. We\u2019re moving about 60 families a month between our\nfour cities and we\u2019re very proud of that number and our staff and volunteers\nwork very hard. Really, it is just the tip of the iceberg. There is so much\nmore we need to do. If we\u2019re really going to take a bite out of this problem\nand really address it, we need greater resources and more awareness.  Your being here today is a step in the right\ndirection and I appreciate the time you\u2019re making to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of YRCCS, Executive Director Jaspreet\nGill shared an early success story of the partnership between her organization\nand Shelter Movers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are beyond thrilled to welcome Shelter Movers to\nGreater Toronto to this partnership and to York Region to better serve the\nresidents of York Region, those women, and the majority of them are women, but\nalso men are also victims as well,\u201d she said. \u201cWe recently had one of our York\nRegion clients referred to Shelter Movers Greater Toronto and this is her\ntestimonial: \u2018I am writing this email as a humble note of appreciation for the\noutstanding volunteer services provided by Shelter Movers. I was facing a\nlong-standing problem and this service took the ability to provide the\nresolution quickly, which exceeded my expectations. I really commend the prompt\nservice provided by Shelter Movers. I am really pleased with the professional\nservices provided by the team. Keep up the good work!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs we know, this service is important. The services\nprovided by YRCCS and partners are important for the clients we serve, but\nthere is no reduction in gender-based violence and violence against women  and we can\u2019t do this alone as individual\nagencies; it requires all of us coming together as a collective, as an entire\nsector, in order to create some real change, because the systemic barriers\nremain. When we can all come together to create that change\u2026 this is the first\nof many steps we will be taking together as a collective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
