A 32-year-old Aurora man is facing manslaughter charges\nfollowing the drug-related death of a 23-year-old last June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn June 8, 2019, York Regional Police were called to a\nresidence in the area of Stone Road and Bayview Avenue after a 23-year-old man\nwas found deceased,\u201d said York Regional Police Constable Laura Nicolle. \u201cYork\nRegional Police began an investigation into the death and learned the victim\nhad died as a result of the use of drugs laced with fentanyl. Officers\ncontinued the investigation and determined the identity of the dealer who sold\nthe drugs to the victim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

32-year-old Stanley Silvera of Aurora was charged\nThursday, February 6, with manslaughter and trafficking of a Schedule 1\nsubstance. The charges have not been proven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is one of several recent investigations where an\nindividual has been charged with manslaughter in York Region after a death has\noccurred as a result of fentanyl,\u201d said Constable Nicolle. \u201cIt is now\nwell-known that fentanyl has caused thousands of deaths across Canada. Anyone\ntrafficking, sharing or providing or lacing other drugs with fentanyl is\nputting the lives of others at risk and can expect to face serious criminal\nconsequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The York Regional Police is one of several community\npartners behind the York Region Opioid Action Plan, along with York Region\nPublic Health. The plan was drafted with feedback from those with lived\nexperience with opioid use and focuses on prevention, harm reduction,\ntreatment, first response and enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOpioids are usually prescribed to treat pain, cough and\nopioid addiction,\u201d they say. \u201cExamples include fentanyl, morphine, methadone,\noxycodone, codeine and hydromorphone. Even when taken as prescribed, opioids\ncan lead to dependence or addiction. At high doses, opioids can also lead to\noverdose and death. Opioids can be obtained illegally with varying and\nunpredictable levels of toxicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, illegal fentanyl is sold in many forms\nincluding patch, powder, pill and liquid and with inconsistent potency. Other\nillegal drugs such as cocaine or heroin can be contaminated with fentanyl\nresulting in unexpected exposure to opioids and\/ or making them more toxic,\nincreasing the risk of overdose and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOpioid overdoses happen to those who are opioid\ndependent, first time users, youth, adults and older adults. People who use\nopioids as prescribed and those who misuse them can experience opioid harms. In\naddition to overdoses and loss of life, other opioid impacts include dependence\nor addiction, hospitalization, lost productivity, enforcement costs dealing\nwith illegal opioids, infectious diseases commonly associated with substance\nuse, psychological trauma experienced by first responders and others who\nwitness overdoses and devastation to families and friends who lose loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cManaging the opioid crisis has become a priority for\ngovernments, non-governmental organizations, health and safety agencies and\ncommunities. Solutions require multi-sector coordination and collaboration,\ncommitment, evidence-based action and involvement from those with lived\nexperience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
