The Federal Government will match donations made in\nmemory of victims of this month\u2019s devastating plane crash in Iran, which killed\n176 people \u2013 including more than 55 Canadians, two of whom had deep roots in\nAurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, the Federal Government announced it will\nmatch donations made to the Canada Strong Fund up to $1.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canada Strong Fund was launched following the tragedy\nby Mohamad Fakih of the Fakih Foundation to collect funds for the victims of\nFlight 752.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMoved by this tragedy and wanting to pay tribute to the\nlives lost, many Canadians have been learning the names of the victims and\nreading their personal stories,\u201d said the Foundation in a statement after the\ndonation fund was established. \u201cThe families of the 57 victims from across\nCanada will face a number of expenses. We are encouraging Canadians to support\nthe families of the victims by making a donation. With oversight from Dentons\nCanada LLP, all donations will flow through Toronto Foundation to qualified [recipients]\nto benefit those affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a time for all Canadians, regardless of race or\nreligion, to come together and show the world what it means to be Canadian.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government\u2019s commitment to match funds is in addition\nto the $25,000 previously announced that will go to each family to cover\nfuneral and travel expenses. It also comes on the heels of the Ontario\nGovernment stepping up with financial contributions of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As The Auroran reported last week, Aurora-Oak\nRidges-Richmond Hill MPP Michael Parsa joined Premier Doug Ford to announce the\nestablishment of a scholarship fund in tribute to the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fund will disburse the proposed scholarships of\n$10,000 to 57 students across the Province, one in memory of each victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was a terrible tragedy, and my heart goes out to\nthe victims’ families and loved ones,\u201d said Premier Ford. \u201cMany of the victims\nwere students and professors with bright futures, studying and teaching at\nOntario universities and colleges, and contributing to the advancement of\nresearch in many lifechanging fields. We will honour their memories through\nthese scholarships to recognize their incredible contributions to our\ncommunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ontario postsecondary institutions who lost students\nor faculty in the fatal plane crash included Carleton University, Centennial\nCollege, Fleming College, George Brown College, Lambton College, McMaster\nUniversity, Queen’s University, Ontario Tech University (formerly UOIT), the\nUniversity of Guelph, the University of Ottawa, the University of Toronto, the\nUniversity of Waterloo, the University of Western Ontario, the University of\nWindsor, and York University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criteria for the proposed scholarships will be\nopen-ended, awarded based on academic merit and financial need, and determined\nin consultation with Ontario’s colleges and universities, as well as with the\nfamilies of the victims. Scholarships will be allocated in honour of each of\nthe 34 victims to the institutions to which they belonged, with the remainder\nallocated to other eligible institutions based on a competitive process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Ministry of Colleges and Universities is leading the\ndevelopment of the scholarship fund and will engage various partners, including\nthe federal government, cultural community groups, and other institutions,\u201d\nnoted the Province. \u201cThe ministry will share more information in the coming\nweeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
