Theatre Aurora continues this season\u2019s\ntheme of \u201cThe Furious Five\u201d with the drama \u201cLes Liaisons Dangereuses\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adapted by Christopher Hampton from the\nnovel written in 1782, it is a tale of psychological and sexual manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Marquise de Merteuil (played by Jessica\nDucharme) and Le Vicomte de Valmont (Dan Bowers), two former lovers in Paris,\nare masters in the art of seduction, toying with the feelings and relationships\nof others for their own cruel enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their latest twisted wager, they\ntarget the married Madame de Tourvel (Kirsty Campbell), whose husband is away\nfrom the country for an extended time. \nThey also sets their sights on the innocent young Cecile de Volanges\n(Shannon Shura), who is mutually in love with her music teacher Le Chevalier\nDanceny (Andrew Sanjay Pawarroo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two schemers work their way into\ntheir targets\u2019 lives, giving the appearance of being friends and confidents\nwith the best of intentions, while playing their mind games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the play continues, Merteuil and\nVicomte gleefully relish their successes, while looking for opportunities to\ngain the upper hand over the each other. \nBut each is also impacted by events in ways they do not expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in such a perverse, succeed at all\ncosts game as this, can anyone actually win?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director Jason Silzer has an excellent\ncast to bring this story to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acting is first rate, especially the\ntwo leads (Jessica Ducharme and Dan Bowers).  \nOozing predatory confidence, they capture your attention every time they\nare on stage, and provide as much information through their movements and\nfacial expressions as they do through their dialog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsty Campbell, Shannon Shura and\nAndrew Pawarroo are great as well, as are supporting players Maria Elena\nPuigbonet as Madame de Volanges, George Khajouian as Azolan, Christine Fraser\nas Emilie, Mickey Brown as Madame de Rosemonde and Tim Gernstein as various\nservants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although set in France 200 years ago,\nthe costumes consist of contemporary clothing. \nThe set itself is simple, but effective, allowing for rapid scene\nchanges.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both of these factors shift attention\naway from this being just a period piece, and allow one to focus on the well\nwritten script and acting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this play, Theatre Aurora has given\nus a strongly performed and very entertaining play with many twists and turns. Excellent\nlocal entertainment for a cold winter\u2019s night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
