What do you get the man who has everything on his\nbirthday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the question Mulmur resident Connie Phillipson\nconsidered as her husband Dennis neared his 82nd<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her solution, to some, might seem out-of-the-box, but was\nnatural for the couple who both have deep roots in Police Services: donating\nthe cost of a dog and enabling a new Canine Police Officer to join the ranks of\nthe York Regional Police (YRP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hux, a one-year-old German Shepherd, along with his\ncanine colleague York, another one-year-old German Shepherd, were formally\nwelcomed to the YRP at a special graduation ceremony held Monday at their\nAurora headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Canine Officers received their badges from YRP Chief\nEric Jolliffe after the successful completion of their basic canine training\ncourse, which focused on tracking, building and area searches, evidence location,\nobedience and criminal apprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Slovakia, Hux has been trained in all of these\nareas and will be handled in the field by Constable Mark Hansen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Chief Jolliffe placed Hux\u2019s badge on the chain around\nhis neck, the Phillipsons beamed with pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is overwhelming,\u201d said Dennis, a member of the Mulmur\nPolice Services Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A retired Toronto Police Officer, Dennis was hailed by\nthe YRP for his long-time support of canine programs across Ontario. Connie, in\nturn, was also recognized by the YRP for her nine years of service with the\nYork Regional Police Services Board and her further career in criminal justice\nas an Anglican priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy husband was turning 82 this year and I thought, what\ndo you give the man who has everything?\u201d said Connie. \u201cI just happened to be\ntalking to [Chief Jolliffe] and learned the Canine Unit was retiring three of\nits dogs and were in need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given Dennis\u2019 long-time support \u2013 as well as his love of\nGerman Shepherds \u2013 Connie said their donation was a perfect fit, a sentiment\nher husband shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel very good about it,\u201d he said, noting how Hux has\nalready demonstrated his ability in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing Hux was now dedicated to protecting communities,\nthey added, was very satisfying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is an extraordinary unit and I think if more people knew about the background and the work they do, there would be even more support for the canine unit,\u201d said Connie, before joking, \u201cNext, we\u2019re going for a mounted unit!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
