Did she, or didn\u2019t\nshe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people are\nfamiliar with the infamous story of Lizzie Borden, even if through the simple\npoem that starts \u201cLizzie Borden took an axe, and gave her mother 40 whacks\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what do we\nreally know about what happened back in 1892 with the murder of the Borden\nparents? Lizzie was eventually acquitted after a sensational murder trial, and\nthe perpetrator (Lizzie or otherwise) was never identified, so may there be more\nto this story?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s what\naudiences are asked to consider in \u201cBlood Relations\u201d, which opens Theatre\nAurora\u2019s 61st season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written by Canadian\nauthor Sharon Pollock, this psychological play within a play uses facts and\nspeculation surrounding the famous Massachusetts incident over 125 years ago to\ndepict events in the Borden household leading up to the murders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director Sergio\nCalderon, a Theatre Aurora veteran, has a great cast to work with. All of the\nactors do an excellent job of creating characters who are confident that they\nare doing the right thing in the interests of themselves and everyone else, while\nthey are simultaneously and unknowingly pushing Lizzie\u2019s mental buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncast includes Robert Ball and\nGerri Sefi as parents Andrew and Abigail Borden, Brian Fukuzawa as Andrew\u2019s\nbrother Harry, Karen Fogleman as\nLizzie\u2019s sister Emma, and Glen Warren as potential suitor Dr. Patrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelagh\nCarlini as Lizzie and Angie Sapalovski as the actress who is studying Lizzie, and who portrays her\nin the play-within-a-play reveal women who run the gamut from sympathetic to\ncreepy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The set is simple but\neffective. Excellent use of lighting, music and sound effects help ratchet up\nthe tension as the play progresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this\nproduction Theatre Aurora is starting its current season\u2019s theme of murder and\nmayhem on a strong note. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, did she, or\ndidn\u2019t she?  That\u2019s up to you to decide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evening\nperformances of \u201cBlood Relations” continue at Theatre Aurora, 150\nHenderson Drive, October 24, 25 and 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
