{"id":25071,"date":"2019-10-25T16:24:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-25T20:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/?p=25071"},"modified":"2019-10-31T14:49:05","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T18:49:05","slug":"aurora-chooses-alleslev-van-bynen-as-next-mps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newspapers-online.com\/auroran\/aurora-chooses-alleslev-van-bynen-as-next-mps\/","title":{"rendered":"Aurora chooses Alleslev, Van Bynen as next MPs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Incumbent Conservative MP Leona Alleslev and rookie\nLiberal candidate Tony Van Bynen will be Aurora\u2019s next representatives in\nOttawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In two hotly contested races Monday night, Ms. Alleslev\nbeat Liberal newcomer Leah Taylor Roy to the top spot in the riding of\nAurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 99.5 per cent of polls reporting at press time, Ms.\nAlleslev took the riding with 44.7 per cent of the vote, or 23,333 votes cast.\nShe was followed by Ms. Taylor Roy with 42.2 per cent of the vote, or 22,014\nballots. Rounding out the riding were Aaron Brown of the NDP with 3,684 votes, and\nTim Flemming of the Green Party with 2,090 votes. Collecting just over 500\nvotes apiece were People\u2019s Party candidate Priya Patil and Libertarian Serge\nKorovitsyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preliminary figures released by Elections Canada indicate\nAurora\u2019s south riding had a voter turnout of 62.7 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following Ms. Alleslev\u2019s floor crossing from the Liberals\nto the Conservatives last year, Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill was a\nclosely-watched riding nationwide. She said she was \u201chumbled\u201d that voters once\nagain decided to place their trust in her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis election was about character, integrity, humility\nand judgement,\u201d she told supporters at her victory celebration. \u201cI believe that\nI was given the opportunity to continue to serve you as your Member of\nParliament hopefully because you feel I embody those characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the riding of Newmarket-Aurora, Mr. Van Bynen joins\nthe thinned ranks of the Liberal Party who secured a new minority government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With 100 per cent of polls reporting at press time, the\nformer Newmarket mayor secured 42.9 per cent of the vote, or 25,957 of ballots\ncast. Trailing him was former Conservative MP Lois Brown, with 23,097 votes, or\n38.2 per cent. She was followed by NDP candidate Yvonne Kelly, who received\n10.6 per cent (6,418), Green Party candidate Walter Bauer with 5.7 per cent,\nProgressive Canadian candidate Dorian Baxter with 898, Andrew McCaughtrie of\nthe People\u2019s Party with 578, and Laurie Goble of the Rhinoceros Party with 101\nvotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elections Canada data indicates a preliminary voter\nturnout of 65.78 per cent in Aurora\u2019s north riding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity of\nliving in Canada is not limited to the chosen few,\u201d said Mr. Van Bynen,\nspeaking to supporters after his election victory of moving to Canada from The\nNetherlands in the aftermath of the Second World War. \u201cThrough hard work and\nthe kindness of my neighbours, I have had the chance to realize the promise of\nthis country. Your hard work and your kindness has provided me with the\nopportunity that I will never take for granted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will be the singular honour of my life to serve this community as your Member of Parliament and I will be forever grateful for everything that you have done on my behalf.
