People sometimes say that the local candidate doesn\u2019t\nmatter, and what counts is the person leading the party, according to Leona\nAlleslev \u2013 but Monday\u2019s election results should put that idea to rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a hard-fought contest on Monday night, voters in\nAurora\u2019s south riding returned Ms. Alleslev to Ottawa, little over a year after\nshe crossed the floor of the House of Commons from the governing Liberals to the\nConservative opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to The Auroran after sealing victory over\nLiberal challenger Leah Taylor Roy, Ms. Alleslev said she was \u201chumbled\u201d by the\nresults and buoyed that electors chose to reinvest their faith in her \u2013 no\nmatter the party stripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy key takeaway is that you have to have the courage to\nstand up and do what is right, not what is easy, and be willing to lose your\njob for the right reasons rather than keep it for the wrong ones,\u201d she said.\n\u201cCanadians value that and they know then that you will serve honourably and\nthey will place their trust and confidence in you to do so. I have always heard\npeople say the candidate doesn\u2019t matter, only the party matters. I would like\nto think that I am the physical representation that the candidate maybe does\nmatter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Alleslev said she and her team knew it was going to\nbe a tight race and as she watched the numbers roll in, she was hoping she had\n\u201cearned the trust and confidence\u201d of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was something of a bittersweet victory, she told\nsupporters in her victory speech that although she had secured her re-election,\nthe Conservative Party fell short of receiving the most seats across the\ncountry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe know what this country needs,\u201d said Ms. Alleslev,\nbefore being interrupted by a supporter who said what this country needed was\nmore of Ms. Alleslev. \u201cWe would have liked to have had a great many more\nConservative MPs win this time around, some of our key people have not been\nsuccessful in this election, and that is obviously a very tragic situation and\nwe\u2019re very disappointed.\u201d
\nDespite this disappointment, she switched gears to the positive \u2013 her victory\nand her team that helped make that happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDear friends, dear colleagues, dear supporters, this\nroom is what it takes, not only to run a campaign, but to shape the future\ndirection of the nation,\u201d she said. \u201cDemocracy is fragile, this election was\nabout character, integrity, humility and judgement. I believe that I was given\nthe opportunity to continue to serve you as your Member of Parliament hopefully\nbecause you feel I embody those characteristics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She went on to tell The Auroran: \u201cI am going to continue doing the work I think is important to the citizens of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill and the country because we have to keep the country together. I am worried about national unity in the west \u2013 One Country, One Canada. We are stronger together and there are far greater challenges outside of our country on the horizon, I fear, that will demand even more that we\u2019re strong at home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
