Mayor Tom Mrakas was among the Greater Toronto Area\nmayors who gathered in Richmond Hill on Monday morning to talk gun control\nlegislation with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Trudeau, who is seeking a second mandate as Prime\nMinister in the October 21 Federal Election, convened the roundtable just days\nafter his party announced that a new Liberal government would ban assault\nrifles and continue to take \u201ccommon sense\u201d action to strengthen current gun\ncontrol laws.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their proposals would give municipalities \u2013 like the\nAurora \u2013 a greater say in gun control measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo many people have lost loved ones to gun violence. And too often, the culprit is military-style\nweapons designed to inflict mass human casualties \u2014 guns so\ndangerous that they have no place in our country,\u201d said Trudeau in a statement\nprior to Tuesday\u2019s meeting. \u201cThoughts and prayers aren\u2019t going to cut it.\nA Liberal government will strengthen gun control, and ban assault weapons\nin Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Measures proposed by the Liberals include, in addition to\nbanning all military-style assault rifles, including the AR-15 working with the\nprovinces and territories to give municipalities the ability to further\nrestrict \u2013 or ban \u2013 handguns, while protecting the rights of \u201claw-abiding\nhunters and pledge\u201d by not bringing back the long-gun registry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a great opportunity to discuss strengthening gun\ncontrols in our communities and how the Federal Government wants to work with\nmunicipalities to give us the tools to fight gun violence,\u201d Mayor Mrakas told\nThe Auroran following the meeting. \u201cHowever, we need more than just gun\ncontrol. We need stronger penalties for those that steal or smuggle handguns\ninto our communities. The penalties for fishing out-of-season or without a\nfishing license are more severe than smuggling a gun into our communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI support local municipalities having greater autonomy\nwhen it comes to matters that have a direct impact on their towns and cities.\nHowever, for an issue as complex as gun violence, personally I believe it will\ntake support at and among all levels of government to identify the most\neffective strategies to address the issue of gun violence in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\r\n\"Facebook\"<\/a>\"twitter\"<\/a>\"mail\"<\/a>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
