April, 1991: Missing the Calder Cup\nplayoffs for the second straight year, the Newmarket Saints skated out of the\nRay Twinney Complex for what many expected to be the last time, soon to be\nrebranded the St. John\u2019s Maple Leafs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, 28 years later, the Toronto Maple\nLeafs farm team will return to its Newmarket home this Sunday, September 29 to\ntake on a bitter rival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now having found success as the Toronto\nMarlies since moving from Newfoundland fourteen years ago, the storied club\nwill play host to the Rochester Americans in a preseason match to benefit the\nCentral York Girls Hockey Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Toronto Marlies have been committed\nto helping promote and grow female hockey so our partnership was an easy\nchoice,\u201d said Richard Clarke, President of the CYGHA. \u201cBeing able to bring\nthe Marlies home to Newmarket to play the first AHL game since 1991 when Ray\nTwinney was their home ice, and they were known as the Newmarket Saints, is a\nwonderfully nostalgic thing to be able to offer our membership and community that\nis steeped richly in hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A full day of events has now been added\nto the program, starting with a pancake breakfast served all morning with free\ncoffee and orange juice served up by McDonalds. A showcase has been prepared to\npromote all levels of the CYGHA throughout the morning, before the junior A\nPanthers squad takes to the ice at noon to take on the Nepean Wildcats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outdoor hockey-themed events will run\nthroughout the day, including a mini concert featuring the Hwy 11 Entertainers,\nfree hot dogs supplied by Maple Lodge Farms, free coffee supplied by Tim Horton\u2019s\n(a donation to the Newmarket Food Pantry would be appreciated in exchange for\nfree food) food trucks and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An autograph session featuring former\nMaple Leafs Rick Vaive and Gary Leeman from 2:30 \u2013 3:30 will set up the 4 p.m.\npuck drop between the Marlies and the Americans, where a set of Leaf tickets\nwill be given away to one lucky fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now in its 26th year, the CYGHA has\ngrown to include over 1,000 members, with a portion of the festivity\u2019s earnings\ngoing to the Panthers organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo have grown to over 1,000 players\naged 4-65+ and be celebrating 25 years was something we wanted to do up big,\u201d\nsaid organizer Jenn Cuypers. \u201cThe Marlies suggested a possible exhibition game\nin the area we could host\u2026they took a look at the Ford Pad at the Community\nCentre but quickly asked to use the much larger rink at Ray Twinney.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets are going for a two-for-one\nprice of $35, which includes a ticket to the Marlies Family Day game on February\n17 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto against the Binghamton Devils.
