There\u2019s a reason classic films are often presented \u201cin\nglorious black and white.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combo is, by definition, monochrome \u2013 but it\u2019s\nanything but monotonous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truman Capote knew it when he threw his legendary Black\n& White Ball in 1966, and, 53 years later, the Aurora Historical Society\nknows it too, as they put the finishing touches on their eighth annual Hillary\nHouse Ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hillary House Black & White Ball will take place\nOctober 26, 2019 at the Royal Venetian Mansion on Industrial Parkway South,\nsomething of a homecoming for the Hillary House Ball, which celebrated its\nfirst event at the space before a long run at a King Township golf club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year\u2019s Ball was a sold-out affair and organizers are\naiming for this year\u2019s Ball to be bigger and better than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur goal this year is fun, fun, fun,\u201d says event chair\nPatricia Wallace. \u201cOne of the key words from the feedback we got last year was\nthat it was a fun Ball, it wasn\u2019t stodgy, and it wasn\u2019t the same old thing, so\nwe want to build on that. We\u2019re back at the Royal Venetian Mansion, which is\nreally exciting and it means we can welcome more guests, which is fabulous. Our\nvision is to give as many people as we can fit into that room a fun evening and\nlet them know why they are there, what they are supporting and how important\nthat is to the fabric of Aurora.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why they will be there and what they are supporting is\nHillary House, the Yonge Street landmark, built in 1862, which is Aurora\u2019s only\nNational Historic Site, and one of only three National Historic Sites in York\nRegion. Located on 2.5 acres of lawns and gardens and owned by the Aurora\nHistorical Society, Hillary House gets some funding from all three levels of\ngovernment, but it is just a little bit. The rest of the House \u2013 including\nindoor and outdoor upkeep, events, and educational program \u2013 is primarily run\nvia grant funding and fundraisers such as the Ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reality is we need those donor dollars,\u201d says Ms.\nWallace. \u201cWe need the donor dollars to keep this place operating as a museum\nthat is open to the public and with a house of this age, grounds that are\nsignificant, it is not a cheap venture. There\u2019s restoration and there\u2019s just\nthe general upkeep of any house you would have. It is important that people\nhave an opportunity to support Hillary House as a heritage site and at Hillary\nHouse you can put your money where your mouth is; people have a chance to put\ntheir money towards something that really matters to the Town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe don\u2019t just do it blindly, either. We\u2019re an open\nbook. You can see what your money goes to here and you can target your money.\nYou can target giving to the new nursery we hope to restore, you can target\ngiving to landscaping projects, exhibit projects, programs for children \u2013 it is\nnot just bricks and mortar you\u2019re donating to solely, it is programs and\neducation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunities to give through the Hillary House Ball are\nnot just limited to ticket sales. The event itself will include the chance to\n\u201cadopt an artefact\u201d, that is, putting money towards the upkeep of specific\nobjects housed at Hillary House for the year, a silent auction, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most wildly successful items in last year\u2019s\nsilent auction, An Evening at Hillary House, which offered the winning bidder a\nprivate, catered evening at the house, with live entertainment and more, will\nbe back this year \u2013 offered at different scales for different prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As patrons contribute to a worthy cause, they will do so\nto the sounds of live music, presented by Soul Benefit, while their magic\nmoments \u2013 including their black and white wardrobe (suggested, but not\nrequired) is captured by Glenn Rodger Photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe just want to have fun and celebrate bringing the Ball\nback to Aurora,\u201d says Ms. Wallace. \u201cIt is a beautiful place and we thought we\nwould just keep it simple with our Black and White Ball \u2013 although you might\nsee a pop of red or silver somewhere, with a little bit of sparkle \u2013 actually,\nwe will have a lot of sparkle to make it fun \u2013 throughout. As it is a Black and\nWhite Ball, guests can come in anything from their favourite little black\ndress, to a tuxedo, or anything black and white you have in your closet that\nyou can have fun with. We don\u2019t take ourselves too seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want you to be comfortable, have fun dressing up,\nhave your picture taken, whether candid or a portrait, by the wonderful Glenn\nRodger, and dance to the music of Soul Benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets to the 2019 Hillary House Black & White Ball,\nwhich will take place Saturday, October 26 at the Royal Venetian Mansion, are\non sale now for $155 per person, $145 for Aurora Historical Society Members, or\n$1,450 or a table of 10.
