They had just passed their local library, when they\npopped a cassette into the car\u2019s tape deck to listen to their latest recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burlington high school students knew what they were\nabout to hear and, satisfied with the sound, they popped the tape out to listen\nto the radio. But, despite the cassette being firmly back in its case, their\nsong continued \u2013 this time, on the radio station to which they had tuned in. As\nthey absorbed what they were hearing, they went over to another station, heard\ntheir song again \u2013 just in time to see a man walking down the street with their\nlatest EP under his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is when Gord Deppe and Sandy Horne of The Spoons\nknew they had hit the big time with Nova Heart and, 40 years, later they are\nstill wowing the crowds with their classic hits and acclaimed new material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Saturday, August 24, the iconic Canadian band will\nhit the stage at Machell Park as headliners for the second night of Aurora\u2019s\nRibfest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spoons are no strangers to Ribfest, having first\nplayed the event in its early days. Not many people got to see them, however,\nas inclement weather turned the park into nothing short of a mud bowl, but\nheartier fans stuck it out for their favourite band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time around, they are bringing with them not only\nthe New Wave sounds that became their signature, but hits from \u201cNew Day New\nWorld\u201d, their first album release in over eight years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Released this past March, \u201cNew Day New World\u201d evokes the\nfun, pop sounds of \u201cRomantic Traffic\u201d and \u201cTell No Lies\u201d but brings their work\ndirectly into 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spoons, founded by Deppe and Horn as high school\nstudent, are about to mark their 40th<\/sup> anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting off as a New Wave electronics band, their style\nhas evolved over the past four decades to encompass rock and pop. With\ntechnological advancements, Ms. Horne tells The Auroran that their 80s sounds\nare still so popular with new and long-time fans, they are relishing being able\nto re-create the sounds in a way that is better and cleaner, straddling the\nline between modern and New Wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re family,\u201d Ms. Horne explains. \u201cI\u2019ve known Gord\nsince I was 14 and in high school, so he is like an extended brother to me. We\nall just get along. Music keeps you young, young at heart. In high school,\nrather than hanging out in the mall, being in gangs, or even playing sports, we\nwere basically a basement band and we just always wanted to play music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have always known I wanted to be on stage performing,\nbut I just didn\u2019t know how I was going to get there. From as far back as the\nage of three or four, I was inspired by Judy Garland and I remember saying to\nmyself, \u2018I want to do what she\u2019s doing,\u2019 but not knowing how to get there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With seven studio albums, numerous singles, and accolades\npicked up along the way, Spoons provided that path, and it is a path that still\nfuels the creative passions of the group\u2019s founding members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just can\u2019t imagine not doing the Spoons,\u201d says Ms.\nHorne. \u201cHeaven forbid anything should happen to Gord or I, but I can\u2019t imagine\nnot playing. I will probably be doing this until we\u2019re way up there, at least I\nhope to be, anyway. We have newer fans because a lot of the time our older fans\nfrom back in the day are introducing our music to their children, and they have\nbecome big fans. Putting our music out in vinyl again has opened up a whole new\navenue, so younger generation people are discovering is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to seeing everybody in Aurora\nagain. We hope the weather will be good because the last time we were there it\npoured buckets, but the fans were still there and we are thankful for that.\nWe\u2019re hoping for really good weather and hoping to see people who couldn\u2019t make\nit out last time because of the weather!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
