Aurora\u2019s brightest student athletes have been recognized\nby Sport Aurora and the Town for their prowess on the field, on the ice, and in\nthe pool as Aurora\u2019s 2019 Student Athletes of the Year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly 40 elementary and secondary school students\ngathered at Town Hall recently, cheered on by their parents, school faculty,\nfriends and peers to receive their recognition, an annual summer tradition at\nCouncil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facilitated by Sport Aurora, the Student Athletes of the\nYear program is part of the organization\u2019s mandate to \u201cdevelop sports and\nrecreation in our community for all ages, genders and abilities,\u201d says Sport\nAurora president Sandra Manherz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEach athlete was selected and named by their school for\nathletic excellence in their chosen sport,\u201d said Ms. Manherz at the\npresentation. \u201cSport Aurora has brought them together under one roof so we can\nacknowledge their exceptional contributions and highlight their achievement in\nour community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAttracting young people into sport programs engages\nactive minds, promotes physical and mental fitness, builds teamwork,\ncommunication skills, humility, integrity, passion, enthusiasm and strong\nself-esteem and self confidence, qualities that are well-represented in the\nroom this evening and will serve our athletes well into their futures. Who\nknows, maybe we have the future hall of famer in our midst right now as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the dignitaries on hand to help celebrate the\nsports stars of tomorrow were Mayor Tom Mrakas, Council, Aurora-Oak\nRidges-Richmond Hill MPP Michael Parsa and, representing Newmarket-Aurora MPP\nChristine Elliott, Dawn Gallagher Murphy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to congratulate all of you,\u201d said Mr. Parsa. \u201cI\njust recently had the opportunity to celebrate as Jordan Binnington brought the\nStanley Cup to Richmond Hill and it was a great opportunity to stand next to\nJordan as he shared some of the stories about how he became the athlete he is\ntoday: the troubles he had to go through to get here. I want to congratulate\nyou, your parents, I want to congratulate Sport Aurora and the Town, Mayor and\nall the Councillors [for being here] to celebrate your achievements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
