Taking part in his first-ever Pan Am\nGames opening ceremonies on July 26 in Lima, Peru, Aaron Nusbaum was already\nthree days into competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dr. G.W. Williams graduate, as well has\nhis beach volleyball partner Mike Plantinga of British Columbia, had little\ntime to embrace the moment as they prepared for their quarterfinal matchup with\nteam Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair had squeaked through the Games\u2019\nopening matchup with Nicaragua on day one of the competition in two games,\nbefore cruising through the United States to meet with Venezuela. It took\nCanada three games, where they were featured on centre court, to punch their\nticket to the semifinal round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They experienced their first loss against\nChile in the semis, before narrowly falling to the Argentinians by scores of\n21-17, and 21-18 to fall just shy of reaching the podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the loss, Nusbaum took it all in\nstride in his inaugural Pan Am Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was incredible to be in the atmosphere\nof a multi-sport event,\u201d said Nusbaum. \u201cEverything from the athlete\u2019s village,\nthe venue, the fans and the overall energy is something that cannot be\nexplained.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nusbaum is no stranger to the big stage:\nhe competed in the World Championships in Vienna in 2017, and has found success\non the Continental Tour all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, he admits he \u201cdidn\u2019t know what to\nexpect\u201d coming into Pan Am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe just knew it would somehow feel\ndifferent. The biggest difference was the feeling of playing on centre court,\nespecially as you go deeper and deeper into playoffs. Every play somehow\nbecomes harder to execute as the hype grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMike and I played some of our best\nvolleyball in terms of our overall consistency and execution. It’s been very\ndisappointing knowing we had two chances at a medal and unfortunately couldn’t\nbring one home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As any good athlete will tell you,\nhowever, it\u2019s important to look to the future, not the past: Nusbaum now has\nhis sights set on qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games, to be held in\nTokyo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Qualification runs through competing in\nContinental Cup events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
