In an effort to uncover Aurora\u2019s rich\nsporting history, John Wood is the latest to be enshrined in the Aurora Sports\nHall of Fame\u2019s \u201cMoments in Sport\u201d initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the ASHoF\u2019s board came together\nlast week to formally recognize Mr. Wood as a key component of Aurora\u2019s\nsporting past, as a former St. Andrew\u2019s College student as well as a silver\nmedalist in canoeing in the Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe \u2018history\u2019 of sport in Aurora is rich\nand diverse and it\u2019s important these stories are shared to remind all of our\npast and to inspire our present and future athletes,\u201d said Steve Kimmerer, a\nmember of the ASHoF board and past president of Sport Aurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Wood attended St. Andrew\u2019s College\nfrom 1964 to 1969, graduating from the prep school in 1970. He won a silver\nmedal for Canada in the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal in the C1\n500-metre canoeing singles event, the first canoe medal for Canada since 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Wood competed and medaled in the Pan\nAm Games as well, and competed for Canada in the Olympics two other times: in\n1972 and in 1968, the latter while he was still a student at St. Andrew\u2019s\nCollege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob McRoberts, Aurora Historical Society\nrepresentative on the ASHoF Board of Directors added \u201cI believe that sharing\nMoments in Sports stories about people in or from Aurora is important. It helps\nresidents to learn about Aurora\u2019s wonderful sport heritage and some special\nevents or characters involved in those sports. Many people, whether they are\nnew or old to Aurora, are unaware of the town\u2019s exciting sports stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Wood was known as a pioneering mentor\naround the canoeing circles: he was a prominent mentor of Larry Cain, who went\non the win the gold medal in canoeing at the 1984 Olympics, who then went on to\nmentor Adam van Koeverden, the winner of the Olympic gold in kayaking at the\n2004 Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
