Quinton Byfield has\nearned himself the opportunity to wear the maple leaf on his chest for already\nthe second time in his short hockey career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former\nYork-Simcoe Express captain was one of 44 players named to the Under-18\nselection roster for Team Canada last week, for the upcoming Under-18 Hlinka\nGretzky Cup in Calgary later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of the men\u2019s\nnational programs Shawn Bullock called the Under-18 camp \u201cunlike any other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlayers are being\nevaluated from the moment they arrive at camp and are preparing to compete in\nshort-term competition,\u201d said Bullock in a press release. \u201cHistorically, Canada\nhas been successful at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, and we know all 44 players will\ncome to camp ready to compete for a spot on the team and the opportunity to\nwear the Maple Leaf in international competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byfield is no\nstranger to international competition: he was one of two Sudbury Wolves players\nnamed to the Under-17 Canadian roster in November in St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also took to the\nHockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in early June to accept the OHL\u2019s Rookie of the\nYear honours, an award he called \u201csuper humbling\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Newmarket native,\ntabbed as a consensus first overall pick before even the midpoint of the\n2017-18 season, was named the winner of the Jack Ferguson Trophy last April as\nthe top choice by the Sudbury Wolves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The six-foot-four,\n200 lb. centre man gained a reputation among the minor AAA circles as the right\ncombination of speed and skill, captaining the Minor Midget Express to an OHL\nCup in March of 2018 while leading the team in scoring with 92 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former St.\nMaximilian Kolbe CHS student added twelve points in the Express\u2019 playoff run,\ncementing his position atop the OHL\u2019s most wanted list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Byfield excelled\nimmediately in his jump to the major junior ranks, posting 29 goals and 32\nassists to lead Sudbury in scoring. As a sixteen-year old, he lit the lamp more\nthan any other Wolves rookie since 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though tabbed as a top prospect for the 2020 NHL\nEntry Draft, Byfield will focus on repeating Canada\u2019s success at the\nprestigious Under-18 tournament in the short term.
