When Morey Doner released a rocket from\nthe top of the box just seven minutes into York9 FC\u2019s match with Winnipeg\u2019s\nValour FC on Canada Day, manager Jim Brennan breathed a sigh of relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His Canadian Premier League squad had\nfailed to find the back of the net for a total of 320 minutes: though this day\nwould see that streak broken with confidence, ending in a 3 \u2013 1 win to close\nout the spring half of the league\u2019s inaugural season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe finish the first part of the season\noff with a win, got a hell of a lot of draws, so we want to turn them into\nwins,\u201d Brennan said. \u201cThe guys say it themselves: we want to compete, we want\nto win and we want to be in that final.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was captain Manny Aparicio that\nposted the game-winning goal in the 57th minute, sending a long free kick past the\nValour keeper, saying postgame how much he appreciated his side\u2019s \u201cgrit and\npassion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simon Adjei posted the game\u2019s final\ntally in stoppage time to secure the York side\u2019s first victory since June 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI had a feeling today would be the day\nwe would get our goals,\u201d Brennan said after the match. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy game,\nbut the group dug in and showed their character and deserved that win. Every\nsingle one of the players put in a good shift and worked hard for one another,\nso it was good to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a similar mindset for Brennan\nthat he has held all year, despite his squad\u2019s shortcomings. He admitted before\nthe match that he often feels sorry for his players at the end of games,\nknowing \u201cthat they deserve so much more because of the work they put in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to be in that final. We want to\nbe champions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defender Ryan Telfer shared in his\nmanager\u2019s confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is really important for some\nguys,\u201d Telfer said. \u201cIt\u2019s that confidence, you know, being able to hit the back\nof the net. We\u2019ve had goal scoring droughts, and Jimmy spoke to us and said\nit\u2019s one of those times where you can\u2019t hit the net for whatever reason, then\nall of a sudden one game comes and everything that we hit goes in. Today was\none of those days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was perfect timing. Now we\u2019re looking\nforward to the fall season, looking at how the whole thing started for us. But\nthe most important thing was we wanted to start playing our own brand of\nfootball. And we just want to get to that point where we keep improving every\nsingle game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUltimately, we want to be playing a\nchampionship game come the end of the season, so that\u2019s really the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three-point effort allowed York9 to\nmaintain a two point lead on Valour to stay out of the basement of the spring\nschedule standings, finishing the first half of the season with a record of\n2-3-5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
