I first met Buster Flynn some\ntwenty plus years ago in Aurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was sometime between 1997\nand 1999. I had become engaged to Julie and although I was still living in\nMississauga at the time, I was regularly attending the Sunday morning church\nservice at Our Lady of Grace Church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first person I met upon\nwalking into the church that initial morning was Buster who was serving as a\nvolunteer usher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have become friendly ever\nsince.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I look forward to seeing\nBuster\u2019s smiling face every Sunday morning and talking to him before the church\nservice about family, his grand kids or the current status of the Toronto Maple\nLeafs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has been involved in many\nfacets of the church\u2019s life since 1975 and has worked with every leader, from the\noriginal parish priest, Father Lynett to the current pastor, Father Frank\nMcDevitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also would inevitably see\nBuster either at the local Shoppers Drug Mart or driving around town in his\nShoppers Drug Mart vehicle delivering prescriptions and other goods to seniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two weeks ago, Buster, who is\nnow 74, let me know that he was retiring from this part time job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buster had already retired\nfrom North York Hydro 23 years ago and then started delivering prescriptions on\na part-time basis for Doane Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that his wife Betty\nand he decided it was the correct time to retire. They want to spend more time\nwith their children and grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that working for 53\nyears was \u201cenough\u201d, but that he will miss meeting with the folks and striking\nup friendships over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that it is a great\njob; \u201calthough I was not doing it for the money, it was very rewarding meeting\npeople\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoppers therefore needs a\nreplacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is more than a job to\nBuster; it was a calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buster worked three to five\nhours per day, five days per week. He would go into Shoppers twice per day,\nfirst at 9 a.m. and be done his morning deliveries by about 11:30 a.m. He would\nthen go in again at 2 p.m. and be done by about 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would usually perform\nabout 15 to 20 deliveries per day, although he has done as many as 40.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buster also looked after\ndeliveries for the Shoppers Drug Mart on Yonge Street in the south part of\nAurora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buster said that the owner\nwould consider an applicant who wants to do one shift only, beginning at either\nnoon or 1 p.m. and going to 4 p.m. or 5 p.m., instead of a split shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This job requires someone who\nis very much a \u201cpeople person\u201d and is very well-organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many of the people that\nBuster visits, this is their only point of contact with someone on a weekly or\nmonthly basis and otherwise these\npeople would have to take a cab or hire someone to bring them their\nprescriptions or other items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This position requires\nsomeone who is trustworthy and honest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buster has had access to some\nsenior\u2019s residences and if the person was not there he would either put the\ngoods and medicine in their fridge or on the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Buster, the\nposition does take a bit of time to get organized and to become efficient. The\ndriver wants to devise the best and shortest delivery route, so that they don\u2019t\ngo back and forth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It helps if the applicant\nknow the streets around Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delivery vehicle is\nprovided by Shoppers. The applicant only need a clean driver abstract. The\nabstract can be obtained from the local license plate office. Shoppers will pay\nfor the cost of the abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are interested in this\nposition, please go into the Shoppers Drug Mart at the corner of Yonge and\nAurora Heights and either speak to Ken Mo, the Owner\/Pharmacist or Rob the\nfront store manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
