Canada\u2019s Birthday Town is putting the finishing touches\non Aurora\u2019s Canada Day celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Monday, July 1, Yonge Street will be a sea of red\nand white as the traditional Canada Day Parade marches south on Yonge Street\nfrom Mosley Street in the north to Murray Drive beginning at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always a colourful spectacle, this year\u2019s parade will see\nmulticultural performers, marching bands and even mounted guards, according to\nShelley Ware, Special Events Coordinator for the Town of Aurora. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is one of our biggest party day celebrations, but\nit\u2019s a party where we really get to boast about what it means to be a Canadian,\nand how proud we are to be Canadians,\u201d says Ms. Ware, who has been spearheading\nCanada Day celebrations in Aurora for the past 16 years. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine a\ndifferent way to celebrate this day than to give every single ounce of energy\nto contribute in some way to make a great celebration for thousands of people.\nI think for those who were born in Canada, it wasn\u2019t a choice we made; we were\nborn into this privilege and it is our responsibility to be aware of our\nprivilege and be aware as to how we can be our best versions of our Canadian\nselves. There are many Canadians who weren\u2019t born here, who have chosen to come\nhere, and I think this day is probably just as special to them as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re starting our day with a great cross-section of\nmarching bands, including one of them being the Governor General\u2019s Horse\nGuards, along with our local White Heather Band and our Royal Canadian Legion\nas well with their Colour Party. In addition to having the marching bands and\nfloats, we\u2019re also going to have different groups of cultural performers as\nwell [such as] Armenian, Brazilian and Mexican dancers.\u201d Following the parade,\nthe festivities will take on a further patriotic tone at Lambert Willson Park,\nwith a full-day of activities planned into the evening, including a citizenship\nre-affirmation ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lambert Willson Park party will kick off with a free\npancake breakfast served up by the Optimist Club of Aurora, a \u201cpassport\u201d\nactivity with thirteen games, each inspired by one of Canada\u2019s 10 provinces and\nthree territories, and interactive performances from Scientational Ssnakes, the\nToronto Kite Fliers, Engineering for Kids, a craft workshop hosted by Home\nDepot and a horseshoe tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On stage, entertainment includes the Pontune 5 Band, Big\nShiny 90s Band, Louisa and the Planets, and the final round of the Aurora Teen\nIdol competition, which will see the Top 8 finalists in a sing-off for the top\ncrown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening will be closed out by Sheer Heart Attack: A\nTribute to Queen, and a spectacular fireworks show around 10 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur citizenship reaffirmation ceremony is small, but, to\nme, it makes a big impact,\u201d says Ms. Ware. \u201cThere are many Canadians who are\nborn into this privilege so we\u2019ve never had to affirm our citizenship as it was\ngranted to us. This is an opportunity for all of us Canadians to express that\noath in unison and that has a huge impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLast year, we were faced with extreme weather with the\nheat advisory we had, but I want to remind people that not everyone is aware we\nhave indoor activities as well. In the nearby Aurora Family Leisure Complex,\nthere is a free indoor family gym, skate and swim. Not everything is solely\noutside; there are definitely lots of options to stay physical and be able to\ndo a family activity together indoors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
